1. Panama Papers:

An extensive investigation by a coalition of media including The Indian Express revealed names of over 500 Indians in a massive leak of 11.5 million tax documents, which suggest that they have been involved in secret dealings of foundations and trusts set up for them by Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca.  According to the documents, the Indians include actors Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, DLF owner KP Singh, famed lawyer Harish Salve, Onkar Kanwar of the Apollo group, late Mumbai gangster Iqbal Mirchi, West Bengal politician Shishir Bajoria, Anurag Kejriwal of Loksatta Party and others.

2. High Court asks IPL to be shifted:

The Bombay High Court reprimanded the BCCI and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for the ‘criminal wastage’ of huge amount of water for preparing pitches in the three stadiums across Maharashtra at a time when the state is reeling under severe drought conditions. The court also demanded the matches to be shifted somewhere else, out of Maharashtra. The BCCI said Maharashtra will lose Rs. 100 crores if IPL is shifted.

3. Kerala Fire Tragedy:

At least 106 people have died and more than 300 injured after firecrackers caused a massive fire at the Puttingal temple in the coastal town of Paravur located about 60 kms from Thiruvananthapuram. The gruesome incident occurred around 3:30 am on Sunday.

4. Mob “Justice” in Rajasthan:

Three teenagers were tied to a tree, brutally thrashed and then paraded around naked for almost 30 minutes at Laxmipura village in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan. The police filed a charge against the three teens aged between 13 and 15 years for allegedly stealing a motorcycle. However, after media’s pressure, the police arrested six men for the attack on the teens but released them later.

5. Mercedes Hit & Run Case:

32-year-old Sidharth Sharma was hit to death by a teenager speeding in a Mercedes in Delhi on Monday. CCTV footage revealed that during the collision Sidharth flung several feet into the air and landed 15 metres away from where he stood.  After five days of wait, the teenager has been charged with culpable homicide on Saturday considering his past record of rash driving.

6. IIT Fees Hike:

The fees of undergraduate courses at the IITs have been revised from Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 2 Lakh per annum for general category students whose family income exceeds Rs. 5 lakh per annum. Two-thirds of this fee is waived for students whose family income is less than Rs. 5 lakh, and the entire fee is waived if income is less than 1 lakh. Students from SC/ST category will get a full fee waiver irrespective of family income.


7. Alcohol Ban in Bihar:

The state government of Bihar imposed a complete ban on selling of any type of alcohol, including Indian made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and country liquor, from April 5, 2016. This decision of banning all types of alcohol by the Bihar cabinet came four days after a ban began on the production and sale of country liquor.

8. BJP expels Leader for Casteism:

Madhu Mishra, the chief of BJP’s Uttar Pradesh women’s wing Mahila Morcha was expelled from the party for six years on April 4, for her controversial remark on lower caste people at a public gathering in Aligarh.

9. NIT Srinagar:

NIT Srinagar continues to be at the center of controversies after many of its non-local students were brutally thrashed by the police last week. Following this clash, two companies of CRPF had to be deployed on Tuesday night to bring the situation under control.  The central government sent a two-member panel to NIT on Wednesday morning to assess the situation. Education Minister of J&K acknowledged that police excesses was there and has assured of action.

10. Women Allowed To Enter Shani Shingnapur Temple:

Following a historic ruling by the Bombay High Court, Maharashtra’s Shani Shingnapur temple authority decided to do away its 400-year-old discriminatory tradition, allowing women devotees to enter the sanctum sanctorum of the temple to offer prayers.  This decision came on Friday, on the auspicious occasion of “Gudi Padwa” i.e New Year for people across Maharashtra.
