In Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut area, a pig was found eating a stillborn baby on the premises of Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College. The act came to notice after the swine was seen consuming the stillborn on the CCTV recording. The hospital authorities have blamed the municipal corporation for letting the stray animal roam around the hospital.

Patient dropped the baby

According to The Times Of India, the hospital claimed that they had lodged many complaints with the municipal commissioner; however, the commissioner did not pay any attention to any of them.

While explaining the entire incident the principal of the hospital, Dr RC Gupta said, “After a patient, Shammo, gave birth to a stillborn at PL Sharma district hospital, she was referred to the medical college, and the stillborn boy was handed over to one of her relatives — a receipt of which is also available with us.”

Gupta added that the body of the infant, however, “accidentally slipped out of the relative’ grab” inside the hospital campus and the pig then consumed it. The principal claimed that the relatives of the woman were in such a hurry that they did not even notice that they have dropped the stillborn.

“The relative was in such a haste to admit the mother, who was in critical condition, at the medical college hospital that she failed to notice it,” Gupta said.

Father claimed the same

The father of the deceased infant has also claimed the same in a written explanation. The father, Ilmas, said that the body of the baby was unintentionally dropped by Ilmas’s mother. “The body slipped out of my mother’s grab inadvertently, as we all were in haste to admit my wife, who was critical, to the hospital,” said the written complaint.

The hospital has claimed that the problem of stray animal roaming in the medical college campus is not new and even after multiple requests to the municipal corporation, nothing was done.

Doctor Gupta further said that after no action was taken by the corporation the campus authority also “appointed a person, who brings a langoor (a mokney breed) on the campus to keep monkeys at bay.

Gupta also said that is very difficult for the hospital authorities to keep other animals away from the campus including dogs and pigs.

On the contrary, the Mayor of the city, Sunita Verma claimed that they have not received any complaint from the medical college side. However, she said that she would look into the matter.

The Logical Indian tried to reach about to the hospital authority, who denied to comment on the issue.

Uttar Pradesh has poor health sector

Amidst the blame game, it is important to keep in mind that the incident also throws light on the poor healthcare system of the state. Since the time Yogi government has come to power the state CM has made the temple and Ram Janambhoomi as his priority. While the CM is asking people “to light a diya (lamp)” at Ayodhya, the rest of the state still lies in the darkness.

UP has the largest population among other states. However, it spends just Rs 452 per capita on health, 70 per cent less than the average expenditure by states, as reported by the Financial Express. According to the National Family Health Survey, 2015-16 (NFHS-4) one in two children in the state is not fully vaccinated. The state of temples has India’s second-highest maternal mortality rate (258 deaths per 100,000 live births) and highest infant mortality rate (64 deaths per 1,000 live births).

At the time when UP is facing such crisis of most basic problem like health and education does it seem right on the part of the government to not prioritize on these issues and pay more attention to the temples.
