Calcutta, Jadavpur Top Among State-Run Universites In QS India University Rankings 2020

The British higher education annual university rankings were published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on Wednesday. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) dominate the QS India Rankings 2020 with five of them securing the top spots. 

IIT Bombay, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and IIT Delhi were ranked as the top three educational institutes in India respectively. IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur secured 4th and 5th ranks while Calcutta University (CU) and University secured the 11th and 12th spot in among all state-run universities.

West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to congratulate the two Bengal universities.

The rankings are based on indicators like academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty and student ratio, staff with a PhD, papers per faculty, citations per paper, international faculty, and international students.

According to the rankings, IIT Bombay was ranked number 8 among top institutions in BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). Jagdeep Dhankar, the chancellor of IIT Bombay, said that he was confident that the universities would do even better in the days to come.

About 11 institutions achieved a perfect score of 100 under the criterion of ‘staff with PhD’ indicator, proving India’s dedication towards research.  Alagappa University, Anna University, and Savitribai Phule Pune University were among other state government-run institutes to feature on the list.
