Early Inspiration
Binish Desai has recalled that television played a role in shaping his childhood interests. Captain Planet, an animated series centred on environmental protection, made him more conscious of pollution and environmental problems. Meanwhile, Dexter’s Laboratory, which featured a young inventor experimenting in his secret laboratory, fuelled his fascination with science and creating things.
Inspired by Dexter, Binish set up a small laboratory at home and began experimenting with everyday materials. One of his early experiments came after he learnt about evaporation and condensation. He noticed steam escaping from a pressure cooker and devised a simple system to collect and condense the vapour so the resulting water could be used for gardening. These early experiments reflected his tendency to look at ordinary situations as opportunities to understand how things worked.
The Gum Experiment
At 11, Binish encountered the experiment that would eventually influence his work with waste-based construction materials. According to accounts of his journey, chewing gum became stuck to his trousers after a classmate left it beneath a school desk. He removed the gum using paper, wrapped it and put it aside.
When he later found the paper, he noticed that the gum and paper had hardened into a stiff block. Instead of simply throwing it away, Binish became curious about the change and began experimenting with the material. He started exploring whether the combination could be developed further and eventually used as a building material.
The discovery did not immediately become a finished product. It became the starting point for years of experimentation. As his work developed, Binish moved beyond chewing gum and began exploring industrial waste, particularly waste generated by paper mills.
Building With Waste
Binish’s experiments eventually led to the development of P-blocks, construction materials made using paper-industry waste and a specially formulated binder. Paper mills generate sludge as a by-product, and his work explored ways of processing this material rather than sending it for disposal.
His approach also expanded to other waste streams and applications. His work has included experiments involving materials such as gypsum, textile waste and other industrial waste. Products developed through his work have included paver blocks and artificial wood made using waste materials.
The technology was also applied to community infrastructure. Earlier reports on Binish’s work described the construction of toilets using his waste-based materials. In 2017, reports said his organisation had constructed more than 1,000 toilets and recycled more than 400 tonnes of paper-industry waste.
His work later extended to waste generated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Binish explored ways of incorporating discarded masks and personal protective equipment made from suitable non-woven materials into specialised building blocks, addressing an additional waste challenge created by the pandemic.

Today, Dr Binish Desai continues to work as an environmental innovator and social entrepreneur, with his work focused on waste management, sustainable materials and circular-economy solutions. His approach involves identifying difficult waste streams, developing methods to process them and finding ways to convert them into useful products.
