Allegations of sexual harassment have surfaced against Prakasam, a functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), involving a female member of the party’s women’s wing. The survivor reportedly lodged a formal complaint with the TVK leadership, seeking accountability and safety within the political workspace.
However, despite initial assurances from high-level officials that disciplinary action would be taken, the party has allegedly failed to follow through, leaving the survivor without redress. This lack of intervention has sparked concerns regarding the internal grievance mechanisms of the newly formed party and its commitment to the safety of its female representatives.
Assurances Met With Inaction
According to reports, the survivor approached the TVK leadership shortly after the incident, providing details of the alleged harassment by Prakasam. While party insiders initially indicated that the matter was being taken seriously, no formal suspension or inquiry committee has been publicly announced.
“The party leadership promised that they would stand by the woman and ensure justice, but days have passed with no visible movement on the complaint,” a source familiar with the development stated.
The silence from the leadership’s end has raised questions about whether political interests are being prioritised over the fundamental right to a safe work environment for women in politics.
A Pattern Of Political Accountability
This incident occurs at a time when TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has been positioning itself as a champion for social justice and women’s safety in Tamil Nadu. Ironically, the party has recently been vocal in criticising the state government for failing to curb crimes against women.
The emergence of internal allegations suggests a gap between the party’s public rhetoric and its private administrative actions. Historically, political parties in India have often struggled with Internal Complaints Committees (ICC), frequently failing to implement the PoSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) Act effectively within their own structures.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that true political change cannot be achieved if the very spaces meant for empowerment become breeding grounds for harassment and silence. When a woman finds the courage to speak up against a colleague, the least a responsible leadership can do is ensure a fair, transparent, and swift investigation.
Inaction does more than just hurt one individual; it sends a chilling message to every woman aspiring to enter public life that her safety is negotiable. We urge the TVK leadership to look beyond internal optics and uphold the values of empathy and justice they advocate on the public stage. A party that seeks to lead a state must first show it can lead with integrity within its own house.
