Political tensions escalated in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur on Tuesday after workers of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) clashed over controversial remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin during a recent Cauvery-related protest. Police intervened to disperse the groups and restore order before the situation could worsen.
The confrontation comes amid an intensifying political row that has triggered police complaints, legal proceedings and statewide protests. While the TVK has accused Udhayanidhi of making offensive and inappropriate remarks, the DMK has maintained that his speech has been deliberately misrepresented.
Authorities have heightened security in several parts of the state to prevent further unrest, even as both parties continue to exchange allegations.
In the latest development, Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested from his residence in Chennai on Tuesday in connection with the FIR registered over his alleged remarks made during a Cauvery-related rally in Thanjavur. Police took him into custody for questioning as part of the investigation.
As he was escorted by officers, Udhayanidhi smiled, waved at supporters and described the arrest as “a joke”, alleging that the case was politically motivated. The DMK accused the ruling TVK government of targeting opposition leaders through false cases, while the TVK maintained that legal action was necessary over remarks it termed offensive and derogatory. The arrest has further intensified the political standoff between the two parties, triggering protests and heightened security across parts of Tamil Nadu.
Street Clash
According to reports, supporters of the TVK and the DMK gathered in Thanjavur amid protests over Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks, leading to heated slogan-shouting that soon escalated into a physical confrontation. Police personnel quickly intervened, separating workers from both sides and dispersing the crowd to prevent violence. No major injuries were immediately reported, but the incident underscored the increasingly charged political atmosphere in the state.
Officials appealed to party cadres to maintain peace and allow the legal process to take its course. The unrest follows the registration of an FIR against Udhayanidhi over the alleged remarks, with the TVK also approaching the National Commission for Women seeking action.
The party has announced statewide protests, arguing that the comments were disrespectful towards women and unacceptable in public discourse. Meanwhile, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan defended the opposition leader, stating that people were “twisting” his speech and insisting that there was no intention to insult anyone. Udhayanidhi has also described the case as politically motivated and accused the ruling dispensation of attempting to silence the opposition through legal action.
A New Political Rivalry Between TVK And DMK
The latest confrontation reflects the rapidly evolving political rivalry between the TVK and the DMK following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Founded by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam entered electoral politics promising transparent governance, clean administration and what it described as a “politics of change.” The party emerged as the ruling force after the elections, ending the DMK’s tenure in government and significantly reshaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
Since then, the DMK, one of the state’s oldest and most influential Dravidian parties founded in 1949 by C.N. Annadurai, has assumed the role of the principal opposition under Udhayanidhi Stalin. The two parties have repeatedly clashed inside and outside the Assembly over governance, law and order, welfare policies and political accountability. The present controversy began after Udhayanidhi’s remarks during a Cauvery-related protest in Thanjavur sparked criticism from the ruling party and several others, leading to police complaints, demands for legal action and widespread political condemnation.
What began as a war of words has now spilled onto the streets, with rival supporters confronting each other and police forced to intervene to maintain public order. Political observers note that the episode reflects the increasingly combative nature of Tamil Nadu’s new political equation, where the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK continue to challenge each other’s credibility while competing for public support.
