Republic Day Parade 2022: How Does Government Select A Tableau Proposal?

The government has rejected the tableaux proposals of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, which has caused a political outrage among these states. Here is how the Republic Day Parade is organised, followed by the selection of tableaux proposals.

Every year in India, on January 26, the Republic Day parade stays a centre of attraction for all its citizens and the global audience. The celebration begins with the unfurling of the tricolour by the president, followed by the marching from several regiments of Armed Forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with their bands. Towards the end of the celebrations, tableaux from various states and Union Territories signifying their cultures and the diversity of India are displayed.

The celebrations conclude with the Indian Beating Retreat ceremony performed by the bands of the Armed Forces. The ceremony is conducted on the evening of January 29, the third day after Republic Day.

The Ministry of Defence is responsible for the Republic Day Parade and its celebrations every year.

What Is Tableau/ Tableaux?

Merriam Webster describes tableau as a graphic representation or artistic grouping. In Republic Day Parade, these tableaux are works of art showing events relevant to the country, and their theme is decided every year. For 2022, the selected theme is around 75 years of India's Independence which is India@75 – Freedom struggle, Ideas@75, Achievements@75, Actions@75, and Resolve@75.

Every September, the Ministry of Defence invites tableaux from state governments, UT administrations, central ministries and departments. The process of shortlisting the proposals begins in the second week of October.

How Are Tableaux selected?

The Ministry of Defence issues a detailed guideline on the selection of tableaux for the Republic Day Parade.

The tableaux proposals are evaluated in multiple meetings conducted by the Expert Committee consisting of prominent personalities in the field of art, culture, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, choreography, etc.

In the first phase, the sketch/design of the proposals are scrutinised, and necessary suggestions are given for modification.

In the second phase, the participants are asked to develop three-dimensional (3D) models of the approved sketch/designs.

In the next phase, members of the Expert Committee interact with the representative of the participating organisation, where all aspects of the tableaux are discussed threadbare.

The selection process extends for over six to seven rounds of meetings with elimination and shortlisting at different stages. The selection of a tableau depends upon a combination of factors, including but not limited to visual appeal, impact on the masses, idea/theme, degree of detailing involved, accompanying music, etc.

Only the shortlisted tableaux in any given round of selection are informed about the next round. It is reiterated that the final selection does not guarantee movement on Rajpath in the final parade.
