The journey of transgender woman Soni Kumari and Adarsh Yadav has emerged as a powerful story of resilience, love and acceptance in the face of deep-rooted social prejudice. Born in a village in West Bengal, Soni spent much of her childhood battling discrimination because of her gender identity before moving to Bihar in search of work. There, she rebuilt her life as a dancer and later met Adarsh Yadav, a student working at his family’s medical shop.
Despite learning about Soni’s identity and the social stigma attached to their relationship, Adarsh chose to stand by her, telling her he loved her “soul” rather than her gender. Their marriage reportedly led to Adarsh being disowned by his family and losing his job, yet the couple have continued to build a life together through social media while pursuing their dreams. Their story reflects the challenges many transgender people continue to face in India, while also highlighting the transformative power of empathy and unconditional love.
A Childhood Shaped by Rejection
Soni Kumari was born in a small village in West Bengal and realised from an early age that she was different from other children. Although her mother initially supported her, neighbours frequently mocked and humiliated her, using derogatory terms for transgender people. As she entered adolescence and did not experience the physical changes expected of other girls, the taunts intensified. Soni has recalled living in constant fear that she would be forcibly taken away by members of the transgender community, a misconception fuelled by social prejudice rather than reality.
Financial hardship further complicated her life. In 2019, she left home and travelled to Bihar to join an orchestra group despite having no formal dance training. Her initial performances attracted ridicule from audiences, but she persevered. A major turning point came when her brother, the family’s sole breadwinner, suffered serious injuries after falling from a three-storey building.
Determined to support her family, Soni continued performing, gradually improving her skills until audiences began requesting her performances by name. The earnings also enabled her to send money home, helping repair strained family relationships.
Finding Love Beyond Labels
Life in Bihar was far from easy. Soni has alleged that she was exploited by a contractor who failed to pay her wages and physically assaulted her. Refusing to remain trapped in exploitation, she established her own dance group in Chhapra, creating employment for herself and others.
During this period, Soni met Adarsh Yadav at a local pharmacy run by his family. Their friendship developed through regular interactions, and over time Adarsh confessed his feelings for her. Soni, however, hesitated to accept his proposal. Having experienced years of rejection and insincere promises, she felt compelled to tell him the truth about her identity.
She explained that she was a transgender woman and that she could never become a biological mother. According to Soni, Adarsh’s response was simple yet profound: “I love your soul. Why would I leave?” His words reassured her that their relationship was based on mutual respect rather than societal expectations.
Marriage Met With Social Backlash
The couple’s decision to marry triggered strong opposition from sections of society. After videos of them began circulating online, Adarsh’s family reportedly disowned him, believing the marriage had damaged their social standing. According to the couple, Adarsh was also dismissed from his job at the family’s medical shop. Soni faced allegations that she had married him for financial gain, while the couple were subjected to intense public scrutiny.
Despite the backlash, Adarsh remained steadfast. Soni has said she repeatedly asked him whether he would leave if society continued to remind him of her identity, but he consistently reassured her of his commitment. Facing mounting pressure from villagers questioning their relationship, the couple eventually solemnised their marriage in a traditional temple ceremony. Although the marriage did not end social criticism, it marked a significant step in asserting their right to live together with dignity and respect.
Building a Future Together
Today, Soni and Adarsh are working towards financial independence and stability. At Adarsh’s request, Soni stepped away from orchestra performances, and the couple now create content on social media to earn a livelihood. Their income is helping Soni fulfil a long-held dream of building a permanent home.
Alongside supporting their household, Adarsh continues his physiotherapy studies in Patna. While he reportedly remains estranged from his family, the couple say they are focused on building a future based on trust and shared aspirations rather than societal approval. Soni has also spoken openly about her hope of becoming a parent one day, either through IVF, if medically feasible, or adoption. She believes that motherhood should not be defined solely by biology but by love, care and responsibility.

Soni Kumari and Adarsh Yadav’s story is a reminder that love, dignity and equality should never be limited by gender identity or societal expectations. While transgender people in India continue to face discrimination in education, employment, healthcare and everyday life, stories like theirs demonstrate the importance of compassion, acceptance and standing by one’s convictions.
