In a chilling escalation of post-poll violence in West Bengal, Chandranath Rath, the personal executive assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead on Wednesday night, May 6, 2026. The attack occurred at point-blank range in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas while Rath was travelling in a car.
While the BJP has pointed fingers at political rivals, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has condemned the murder and called for a court-monitored CBI probe. Despite the Election Commission’s directives for “zero tolerance” toward violence, the state remains gripped by tension as police hunt for the motorcycle-borne assailants who fled the scene.
A Targeted Ambush on Jessore Road
The fatal incident took place near the Doharia crossing on Jessore Road, roughly three kilometres from the Kolkata airport. According to police reports, Rath was seated in the front passenger seat of a black SUV when motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted the vehicle.
The attackers reportedly fired through the front windshield and the side window, hitting Rath multiple times in the chest and abdomen. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
An associate travelling with him also sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment. BJP MLA Tarunjyoti Tewari reacted sharply to the news, stating, “We have been preaching peace, but TMC has made its biggest blunder,” suggesting a deep-seated political conspiracy behind the hit.
The Shadow of Post-Poll Unrest
This murder is not an isolated event but part of a broader, more disturbing pattern of unrest following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Just hours before the attack, Suvendu Adhikari had publicly called for calm, yet the state continues to witness clashes. Reports indicate that at least two others a BJP worker in New Town and a TMC worker in Birbhum were killed in separate incidents earlier this week.
In response to the escalating situation, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary and the DGP to ensure the immediate arrest of those involved in vandalism and violence. Meanwhile, the TMC issued a statement distancing itself from the attack, saying, “Violence and political killings have no place in a democracy,” while simultaneously alleging that its own workers have been targeted by BJP-backed miscreants.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The brutal killing of Chandranath Rath is a heartbreaking reminder of how far we have strayed from the ideals of a healthy democracy. Politics should be a battle of ideas, not a bloodbath where lives are lost to satisfy regional rivalries. At The Logical Indian, we believe that no electoral victory or defeat justifies the loss of human life.
We urge all political parties to move beyond the rhetoric of blame and actively work toward de-escalating the environment of fear that currently grips the state. True progress can only be achieved through dialogue, empathy, and a collective commitment to harmony. It is time for the administration to act decisively to restore the rule of law and ensure that justice is served, regardless of political affiliation.
