The Delhi government has officially approved a significant pay hike for over 1,900 vocational instructors and teachers employed under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). Education Minister Atishi announced the decision, noting that revised monthly salaries will now reach up to ₹38,100.
This move addresses long-standing demands for financial parity and security among contractual educators who form the backbone of the city’s skill-based training. The development follows a cabinet decision aimed at improving the livelihood of those bridging the gap between academic education and professional vocational training.
Fair Wages for Educators
Under the new salary structure, the remuneration for these instructors has been enhanced to provide better financial stability. Previously, many of these educators were operating on lower scales despite their critical role in the Samagra Shiksha programme. Education Minister Atishi stated, “The Delhi government, under the leadership of CM Arvind Kejriwal, has always kept education as its top priority. These teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of our students, and it is our responsibility to ensure they are fairly compensated for their dedication.”
The move is expected to boost morale among the 1,900 affected staff members, who have often voiced concerns regarding the high cost of living in the capital relative to their previous earnings.
Building a Robust Education System
This pay revision is part of a broader trajectory by the Delhi government to overhaul the public schooling system. Over the last few years, the administration has focused on upgrading infrastructure and introducing specialized curricula, such as the ‘Happiness’ and ‘Entrepreneurship’ mindsets. Vocational instructors, in particular, have become central to the state’s mission to make students “job-ready.”
By aligning the salaries of Samagra Shiksha teachers more closely with permanent staff standards, the government aims to reduce the turnover rate of skilled instructors and ensure continuity in the vocational labs and classrooms that serve thousands of children from marginalized backgrounds.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that the true progress of a nation is mirrored in how it treats its educators. While infrastructure and technology are essential, the dignity of a teacher is the cornerstone of a healthy society. We appreciate this step toward pay equity, as it acknowledges the hard work of contractual employees who often perform the same duties as their permanent counterparts with less security.
Ensuring a fair, liveable wage is not just an administrative duty but an act of empathy and justice. When we value our teachers, we value the future of our children.
