Ever heard of students making a hue and cry over teacher’s transfer? Heartbreaking scenes came out of a Government High School in Veliagaram, Thiruvallur on Wednesday. A bunch of school students clutched to their favourite English teacher, G Bhagwan, refusing to let him leave.

Students hugged, pleaded and cried seeing their favourite teacher getting transferred. They pleaded with him and refused to let him go. Seeing the affection and love of his pupils, Bhagwan too got emotional and heartbroken. He took the students to a hall and consoled them. He assured them that he will be back in a few days. This emotional bond between the teacher and the students made officials withheld Bhagwan’s transfer for ten days.

More than just a teacher

G Bhagawan joined the government school in 2014. He has a B.Ed. He is the only English teacher in the school who teaches till 10th standard. Bhagwan teaches more than 200 students and the school has achieved 100% pass in English in public exams during his tenure.

His teaching goes beyond the syllabus. Bhagwan knows how to keep his students interested in learning by indulging in various interactive sessions with them. He also teaches general knowledge, career, and competitive exams preparation, “I used to narrate stories, understand their family background, talk to them about their future, and show them things via the projector. More than a teacher, I’m a friend, a brother to them” Bhagwan told The News Minute.

The government conducts counselling sessions to transfer additional staffs to other schools in need. The government school Bhagwan was teaching in was overstaffed. Usually the youngest teachers are chosen for a transfer. Bhagwan attended one such counselling session and chose Arungulam government school, near Tirutani as his preferable location. Along with another teacher, Bhagwan was chosen to go to Arungulam government school.

“The transfer is part of the usual deployment and based on teaching hierarchy. They have to carry it out as per the requirement.” Education department officials told The Times of India.

The transfer of Bhagwan displeased the students. Even parents were not pleased with the decision of transferring their favourite teacher. Students with the backing of their parents decided to bunk classes on Tuesday as a sign of protest against the transfer.

Speaking about the incident, Bhagwan told Puthiya Thalaimurai “Even I’m surprised with the student’s reaction. I did my job, I’ve never scolded any students and treated them like friends. I’m yet to recover from this euphoria.”

One of the students told Puthiya Thalaimurai “We want our sir back else we will get TC (Transfer certificate) and leave the school. We can pass 10th only if he is there and also the school can also start +1 & +2. He conducts special classes and teaches us well. If he is transferred who will take care of us.”

After the decision of transfer was put on hold for 10 days, Principal A Aravind said “We have requested the department if there is a possibility of retaining the teacher. He is one of the best teachers we have, completely involving himself in teaching students” reports The Times of India.

The news went viral and was widely shared through social media. Appreciation flew in from every corner. Music Director AR Rahman shared news regarding this incident on Twitter. His tweet read the caption “Guru Sishyas”. Huge recognition indeed for the teacher, who is more than that to his students.

The Logical Indian community appreciates Bhagwan’s dedication towards his students. The gesture shown by his students speak about the influence he has on their lives. This is the greatest appreciation a teacher can receive. We hope more teachers invest their time in their students’ lives like him.
