Sikkim has been ranked the cleanest state in a nationwide cleanliness survey of rural India. Kerala, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland stood 2nd. 3rd, 4th and 5th in the rankings respectively. While Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand were the worst performers in the rankings.

These findings by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) were made public by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation on Thursday. The Swachh Survekshan 2016 ranked 26 states based on the percentage of households that have access to sanitary toilets.

According to the ministry, the NSSO findings are however, one year old and in the meanwhile, states like Madhya Pradesh and UP have significantly improved in their cleanliness quotient.

The Swachh Survekshan 2016 also included a separate survey carried out by the Quality Council of India, which offered rankings to 75 best performing districts, over 70,000 households based on their toilet coverage since the launch of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan of the government in October 2014.

Of the 75 districts, 53 are located in the plains and 22 in hilly areas. Among the 22, Mandi in Himachal Pradesh is the cleanest. Sindhudurg and Satara districts of Maharashtra and Nadia in West Bengal figure in the top three of the 53 districts.

The Logical Indian congratulates the state governments which have performed good in the ranking and also request the state govt of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand to work hard to make their states clean.
