Cracking the Union Public Service Commission examinations with flying colours is a dream-come-true for many of us. Years of hard work and perseverance go into preparation, and once success is achieved, happiness knows no bounds.

But, if the UPSC aspirants are asked about the reason on why they want to pursue this road, one would not get coherent replies from their side. On top of that, if it is implicated that the perks of a government job are what had made them sit for the examinations, one is sure to offend the aspirants.

The Logical Indian brings forth the story of a dedicated and hard-working public servant in the truest sense of the term. Mangesh Ghildayal and his wife Usha Ghildayal are living examples of people who want to serve the society – amidst deep-seated corruption and red tape; this couple is a ray of hope.

Mangesh Ghildiyal is currently the District Magistrate of Rudraprayag. However, while he was functioning as the DM of Bageshwar district, he along with his wife had done a lot for the locals. The love and respect for the DM reached to such a level that hundreds of people in the district took to the streets to oppose his transfer to Rudraprayag.

He cracked the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) examination in 2011 securing 4th position countrywide. In spite of having an opportunity to join the IFS, he chose to serve the home cadre and has proved his worth within a very short span of time.

Mangesh is also popular for spreading awareness among people about several government welfare schemes.

Prompt action and frequent inspection visits are Mangesh’s trademark way of functioning. On one such visit to Rajkiya Girls Inter College in Rudraprayag recently, he learnt that the school did not have a teacher for the science subject. He was aware that even a day’s loss for students appearing for the board examinations would be a huge loss.

It was then that he came up with a brilliant, yet startling idea. He proposed that Usha could teach the students as a stop-gap measure, till the school recruited a new teacher. Usha is a doctoral fellow in plant pathology from Pantnagar University, Uttarakhand.

Usha was only happy to comply and started teaching at the school right away. She soon endeared herself to the students. It ‘s hard to win over youngsters, but Usha was able to do so with her calm nature and sound teaching techniques. Soon she turned into their favourite.

This heart-warming gesture of the couple has only made them popular with the locals.

Speaking to The Logical Indian, Mangesh said, “It is my biggest satisfaction that people have appreciated what my wife and I have been doing. I was simply doing my job but when you get such overwhelming response, one feels encouraged and wishes to do more.”

The Logical Indian community salutes the initiative taken by the Ghildayal couple. Government officials and its way of functioning usually garner sneers and dejection from the people. It is only because of people like Mangesh and Usha that we are encouraged to hope – disregarding their high status, they have worked for the people on the ground.
