Social service post retirement
71-year-old Sneh Lata Hooda could have chosen a life of leisure and comfort after her retirement from service in Delhi Administration in 2006. But she had a noble vision in her mind. For the last ten years, she has been running a small school on the sidelines of a road close to Hooda City Centre in Gurgaon.

Spending her pension for the underprivileged

Sneh Lata, who is popularly known as “Gaurav Maa” is spending her pension on educating poor kids. She chose to teach underprivileged children and called for the sons and daughters of slum dwellers, maids and others who do menial jobs. A journey which started with 10 children had now reached the mark of 150 students in her school. She teaches students up to class eight and tries to send them to mainstream schools later.

Food and education for the children

Not only education but children are provided with vocational training as well. The classes are held daily from7.30am to 12.30pm. Students have been provided books, bags and uniform among other things so that they can study without any hindrance. They are also given lunch. The thrust is on maintaining regularity. Being the children of watchmen, maids and daily wagers there is a high degree of migration. Sneh Lata has not only become a teacher, but also a motherly figure for the students.
