Humanity Above All: Arunachal Governor Flies Pregnant Woman Out In His Own Helicopter

In a heartwarming gesture, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) BD Mishra jumped into action and took a pregnant lady in his own helicopter from Tawang to a hospital, Raj Bhawan sources said on November 29.

The chopper developed a minor snag after refuelling at Tezpur and the Governor arranged for an Air Force helicopter for the pregnant couple to fly out first. He then waited for another chopper to come and pick him up later.

He did not stop at that. To ensure that the woman and her baby are safe, he arranged an ambulance for the woman at the Raj Bhawan helipad at Itanagar, where the copter was landing. He also made sure that the ambulance has a lady gynaecologist so that no time is lost while travelling to the hospital. Thanks to the Governor’s support and help, the woman underwent a successful emergency caesarean delivery, reported NDTV.

How did it happen?

Tawang and Itanagar are 200 kms by road. The terrain being hilly, it takes almost 6 hours for people to travel. By air, it takes hardly 2 hours.

The entire chain of events started on November 28, Wednesday. Governor Mishra was attending an inaugural ceremony at Tawang when they overheard the Chief Minister Pema Khandu and the local MLA talk about the unavailability of a helicopter for the next three days.

The MLA was informing the CM that a woman was in urgent requirement of medial attention but could not get a helicopter because of the unavailability. Overhearing the conversation, Governor Mishra offered to take the woman and her husband to Itanagar with him in his helicopter. The two officials who were travelling along with him were asked to stay back to accommodate the couple.

They landed in Tezpur, Assam for refuelling. While doing so, the pilot realised there was a technical snag and aborted the flight from going forward. Concerned over the condition of the patient, the Governor asked the Commanding Officer of the Air Force Station, Tezpur for another flight.

The couple was then flown out and the Governor followed them later on another flight. After getting to know about the successful surgery of the woman, he congratulated them and wished the new family all the best.

The Logical Indian applauds the heartfelt gesture of Governor Mishra. He is an army veteran who had previously been a Commander of the Black Cat Commandos Counter Hijack Force that rescued 124 travellers from a hijacked aircraft in Amritsar. Now, because of his gesture, precious time was saved for the woman and her child who received the required medical attention.
