In A Welcome Move UK Witnesses Its First Muslim Gay Wedding

In a first, UK witnessed its first Muslim gay wedding between Jahed Choudhury (24) and Sean Rogan (19), as has been reported by Daily Mail.

Choudhary hails from West Midlands and has experienced ostracisation throughout his childhood. His family had even sent him to a religious pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh to bring about a change in his sexual orientation. Not only that, but he was also forced into taking medication, changing his social circle and even having a girlfriend.

Choudhury was exasperated with his life and wanted to end it. Rogan saw him shedding copious tears on a town bench in Darlaston. He walked up to him, consoled him and finally talked him out of the situation. This happened two years ago, and since then their love has seen no bounds.

As a culmination of their two-year long relationship, the couple married decked up in traditional attire in a first ever Muslim gay wedding in Walsall in a low-key ceremony.

Coming from a conservative Muslim background, Choudhary always felt trapped in the manner he was forced to live. He was unable to open up to his family members and used to be singled out because of his life choices.

Speaking to Daily Mail, he said, “It went all over school, people would spit on me, empty the rubbish bins on me, call me a pig and the Muslim people would shout “harum” – which is a very nasty insult in my language.”

All his life, Choudhury has been subjected to horrible homophobic slurs and physical assaults. He was even debarred from getting into the mosque for his sexuality. Life had become unbearable for him till he met his current partner.

Choudhury claims that he faced a lot of discrimination, especially because of his Muslim background. But, with the help of supportive friends and families, he has come to a point in his life where he is strong enough to carry out his wishes without fearing the consequences.

“I want to say to all people going through the same thing that it’s okay – we’re going to show the whole world that you can be gay and Muslim,” Choudhury said, speaking to The Telegraph.

Choudhury and Rogan’s marriage took place in the midst of several anonymous death threats, but the lovers are not ready to cow down to any form of pressure.

The Logical Indian community congratulates Jahed Choudhury and Sean Rogan and salutes the courage they have shown. It is essential to resist and protest against homophobia that still exists in large parts of the world. It is only through such acts that the society will be normalised towards the concept of homosexuality and accept it in its full right – it is high time that homophobia becomes a thing of the past. Religious discrimination coupled with homophobia had made Jahed’s life unworthy of living – it is important that we realise our responsibilities and be sensitive towards one and all.
