In case you cannot travel or there are sudden changes in plans, a person holding a confirmed train ticket can now transfer it to another person who wants to travel on the same route and date. As per the rules introduced by the Indian Railway Board, one can give a reserved ticket to his/her family member.

The guidelines for transfer of confirmed train tickets to another person were formulated back in 1990 and amended in 1997 and 2002. This attempt allowed a transfer of reserved ticket to another family member, be it the spouse, father, mother, sibling or children. Also, a ticket can be transferred to another government servant travelling on duty. In almost all cases, an application must be submitted by a ticket holder at least 24 hours before the train departure. According to a statement released by the Indian Railways, a Chief Reservation Supervisor must permit the officer to change the name of a passenger having a reserved seat or berth.

Here is full information on how you can transfer your ticket to someone else:

If a government servant proceeding on duty wants to transfer his/her ticket, then a written request should be made before 24 hours of the scheduled departure of the train. After which ticket would be named in favour of a person for whom the transfer is sought.

One can transfer his confirmed ticket to any member of his family for which you need to request the railway authorities in writing 24 hours before the train is set to depart.

If a passenger is a student from any recognised educational institution such as Delhi University and wants to transfer his/her ticket to another student from the same institute, then a student passenger should coordinate with the head of the institution. After his consent, one can make a written request 48 hours before the scheduled departure.

A ticket reserved in the name of a person who is a member of a marriage party then head of the group can submit a request for 48 hours of train departure. In this way, the ticket can be transferred to any other person.

Further, if a group of National Cadet Corps has reserved tickets but need to transfer it/them to any other cadet, then a group head is required to make a written request 24 hours before the train’s departure.

Notably, Indian Railways has confirmed that a request will be granted only once. Whereas, in case of NCC cadets, marriage party and students, a request for a change more than 10 percent of the total strength of group shall not be granted.
