In a latest, RTI revelation has exposed the Government’s will to spread awareness on RTI in our country. The report also discovers that Gujarat has received a rupee for RTI publicity in the year, 2015-16. It is bizarre as Prime Minister Modi, who is a crusader for Digital India Campaign comes from Gujarat.

RTI activist, Shailendrasinh Singh Jadeja had sought information from the Central government about the expenses incurred by it towards the promotion of the RTI Act in the country, which the spending of funds has massively diminished from Rs 18 crore in 2013-14 to just Rs 5.82 crore in 2016-2017.

Official figures of fund disbursement create some severe doubts about the intentions of creating awareness by the government.

Periodically Centre releases a portion of funds as per requirement placed by the state governments to run training programme and carry out awareness regarding RTI.

At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is calling upon the public to raise questions, the Central Government is not contributing money for the publicity and promotions of the RTI Act, which is in itself shocking, and it seems that the Government is trying to avoid the publicity and development of the RTI Act. Gujarat has received ZERO funds in the last two years duration from the Central government to promote RTI. But when we compare it to the neighboring BJP-ruled Maharashtra government received Rs 55 lakh in 2016-17 for the programme.

While talking to The Logical Indian, RTI activist Shailendrasinh Jadeja said that “It is a sheer disappointment while looking at the figures of disbursement of funds to promote RTI as Central Government spends heavily to promote Digital India. And then I have been writing to the government for almost one year that there is no RTI portal in Gujarat, and we have not received any response from the Government”.

If we keep aside the case of funds disbursements, several RTI applicants have been complaining that their queries are not replied in a time-bound manner and sometimes the answers are suppressed too.
