Free A Billion is a Not-for-profit initiative, bringing together citizens to make India great again. It envisions an India rooted in uncompromising respect for individual freedom in all its aspects – economic, social, religious, and political – with an open society where free markets under the rule of law lead to growing prosperity for all. It’s a bottom-up people’s mass movement that aims to revamp India’s operating system by creating a popular demand for a new set of rules for the country that safeguard individual freedom for all persons.

In 2014, a report by the Indian government Planning Commission, submitted by the Rangarajan Expert Group estimated that 363 million Indians, making up 29.5% of the total population, were living below the poverty line. The population of the United States of America is 319 million people. We have more than an entire nation of poor people living within the boundaries of India. Why are we still lagging when it comes to being a prosperous country?

Today, freedom and prosperity remains elusive for more than a billion Indians. Free A Billion will be translating ideas into action – here’s how it expects the coming months to pan out:

May 2016: By end of the month, the draft Model Municipal Corporation Bill will be ready for review and discussion with key stakeholders and citizens. Efforts to build our digital and on-ground support gathers momentum.

June 2016 – August 2016: Push for passage of the new Bill in the Assembly through concerted efforts by network of their supporters – key influencers, citizen pressure groups – digital and on-ground campaigns. If not the entire Bill, it will continue to insist on a set of key amendments.

September 2016 – February 2017: While looking at reforming the BMC Act, it will also strengthen the pressure group to grow to 20% of Mumbai voters. If Plan A of reforming the BMC Act fails, the bloc of voters will rally their forces behind impeccable, independent candidates, who will help realise Mumbai’s potential.

February 2017 and thereafter: It emerges as an undeniable, sustained force of change that will not compromise on the city’s future, and continue to function as a watchdog to ensure efficient, accountable government. It will grow to more cities in India and become a national movement.

The Logical Indian team wishes Free A Billion all the best for it’s future endeavours and will try to support wherever possible.
