The National Testing Agency (NTA) has cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3 after reports of a suspected question paper leak and irregularities involving a possible organised network across multiple states. The Centre has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, while announcing that a fresh examination will be conducted with existing registrations retained.
The decision has triggered nationwide political backlash, with Leader of opposition, Rahul Gandhi sharply criticising the government and alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Amrit Kaal” has turned into “Vish Kaal”, as lakhs of medical aspirants face renewed uncertainty.
NEET UG 2026 Cancelled After Leak Allegations
The NEET UG 2026 examination, one of India’s largest medical entrance tests taken by over 22–24 lakh aspirants, has been officially cancelled by the National Testing Agency following serious allegations of a question paper leak and irregularities. According to official statements, the decision was taken after inputs from central agencies and law enforcement bodies raised concerns about the integrity of the exam conducted on May 3.
The government has confirmed that the matter has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive inquiry. The NTA has stated that a re-examination will be conducted on revised dates, which will be announced later. Importantly, authorities have clarified that students will not need to re-register, and existing candidature details will remain valid as part of the fresh test cycle.
The cancellation comes after reports suggested that portions of the question paper may have been circulated in advance through alleged “guess papers”, raising doubts about fairness. Investigations are reportedly tracing a wider network spanning multiple states, including Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, where early leads were identified during probe operations.
‘Amrit Kaal Has Turned Into Vish Kaal’
The decision has triggered a sharp political reaction across the country, with opposition leaders accusing the government of systemic failure in conducting national-level examinations. Reacting strongly, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticised the administration, stating that repeated exam irregularities reflect deep structural issues in governance.
In a strongly worded statement, Gandhi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Amrit Kaal” has effectively turned into “Vish Kaal”, referring to what he described as a period marked by corruption, leaks, and the suffering of students. He also alleged that competitive exams have become an “auction”, where questions are reportedly being circulated and sold before examinations, highlighting growing frustration among aspirants.
Other opposition leaders have also demanded accountability from the National Testing Agency and called for stronger parliamentary oversight into the conduct of high-stakes examinations. Meanwhile, student groups have staged protests in several cities, demanding transparency and immediate reform of the examination system.
Investigation Expands As Students Demand Accountability
According to officials, preliminary investigations suggest a possible organised network behind the alleged leak, with links being probed across coaching centres, intermediaries and suspected agents. Law enforcement agencies have reportedly detained several individuals in connection with the case, while digital and financial trails are being examined to identify the source of the breach.
The NTA has stated that the cancellation was unavoidable in order to preserve “transparency and credibility” in the national examination system. Officials have also assured that the re-conducted exam will be held under stricter security protocols to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
The controversy has also reignited concerns over repeated examination irregularities in India’s competitive testing ecosystem, with students and parents questioning the effectiveness of existing safeguards. Education experts argue that beyond immediate investigations, systemic reforms are urgently needed to restore trust in public examinations.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The cancellation of NEET UG 2026 is not just an administrative setback; it is an emotional and psychological blow to lakhs of students who dedicate years of hard work towards a single exam. While investigations and accountability are essential, the recurring nature of such allegations points to deeper systemic vulnerabilities that cannot be ignored.
At The Logical Indian, we believe that transparency, empathy, and reform must go hand in hand. The focus should not only be on identifying those responsible, but also on rebuilding a fair, secure and student-centric examination framework that restores faith in public institutions. As India moves forward, the question remains: Can the country ensure a truly leak-proof, transparent examination system that protects the dreams of its youth or will such controversies continue to define the future of competitive exams?
