A fire broke out in four coaches of the Amritsar–New Jalpaiguri Karmabhoomi Express near Sarai Banjara railway station in Punjab’s Patiala district on Friday, November 6, triggering panic among passengers and prompting an emergency evacuation. More than 1,500 passengers were evacuated after the blaze spread from one general coach to adjoining compartments.

While initial reports suggested that no casualties had occurred, subsequent reports confirmed that several passengers sustained minor injuries, including burn injuries. Emergency services, railway personnel and local residents joined the rescue operation. The Railways arranged alternative trains and transport for stranded passengers, while a detailed investigation was ordered to establish the cause of the fire.

Fire Spreads Across Four Coaches

The incident occurred at around 1 pm on the Rajpura–Sirhind railway section when Train No. 12508, travelling from Amritsar to New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, was passing near Sarai Banjara railway station. According to reports, the fire initially erupted in one of the general coaches before spreading to two adjoining coaches. A fourth coach also sustained minor damage.

Thick smoke and flames were seen emerging from the affected compartments, forcing passengers to rush out of the train in panic. The loco pilot and guard brought the train to a halt and detached the affected coaches to prevent the fire from spreading further. Railway officials also switched off the overhead electric supply as a precautionary measure.

According to subsequent reports, Rajpura Civil Hospital received 15 passengers, including eight with minor burn injuries, while another passenger was treated at Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital. All were reported to be stable. More than 1,500 passengers were travelling on the train at the time of the incident.

Rescue Operations And Investigation

Following the incident, the district administration dispatched ambulances, fire brigade teams and police personnel to the location. Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, railway staff and local residents worked together to bring the blaze under control and assist passengers. Patiala Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal and Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Hans also visited the site to assess the situation. Aggarwal said the administration had acted promptly after receiving information about the incident at around 1.30 pm.

He appreciated the cooperation of local residents and emergency response teams in preventing further loss of life. Ambala Divisional Railway Manager Vinod Kumar Bhatia said railway safety mechanisms were activated immediately after the fire was detected. He added that a detailed forensic investigation would be conducted to determine the cause. Preliminary reports suggested a possible electrical short circuit, although the exact reason has not yet been officially established. Rail traffic on both sides of the affected section was temporarily halted as a safety precaution.

The Railways subsequently arranged two special trains to help passengers continue their journey towards New Jalpaiguri. Food, drinking water, tea and other essential assistance were also provided, with local residents and a nearby gurdwara extending support.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Railway journeys connect millions of people across the country, and incidents involving fires in passenger coaches highlight the importance of consistent safety inspections, effective emergency response systems and passenger awareness. While the coordinated efforts of railway personnel, emergency services and local residents helped prevent a potentially larger tragedy, the reported injuries underline the need to examine what went wrong and whether existing safety measures were adequate.

The Railways must ensure that the investigation is thorough, its findings are made public and corrective measures are implemented to prevent similar incidents. Equally important is ensuring timely medical assistance and adequate support for affected passengers. Public transport safety should never be treated as an afterthought. How can Indian Railways further strengthen passenger safety and emergency preparedness across its extensive network?
