Dr. Chetan S. Solanki, known as the “Solar Man of India” and “Solar Gandhi,” is on an extraordinary 11-year journey dedicated to promoting climate action and energy independence through his initiative, the Energy Swaraj Yatra. As a professor at IIT Bombay and the founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation, Solanki has committed his life to educating and inspiring individuals across India to adopt sustainable energy practices.

The Energy Swaraj Yatra: A Journey of Purpose

Launched in November 2020, the Energy Swaraj Yatra is a solar-powered expedition that aims to cover over 60,000 kilometers across India. Solanki travels in a specially designed bus equipped with solar panels, which not only powers his living space but also serves as a mobile classroom for raising awareness about climate change and renewable energy solutions. His mission is to foster energy literacy among one billion people and encourage ten million households to transition to solar energy by 2030.

Key Achievements

1. Over 1,000 Talks: Solanki has delivered more than 1,000 lectures on climate change and solar energy, reaching diverse audiences from urban centres to rural communities.

    2. Training Programs: His efforts have resulted in enrolling over two million people in energy literacy training sessions, emphasising the importance of sustainable practices.

    3. Innovative Projects: Through the Solar Urja through Localization for Sustainability (SoULS) project, he has facilitated the creation of solar lanterns, with approximately one million units produced within just eleven months.

    Personal Background and Motivation

Growing up in Barwani, Madhya Pradesh, Solanki’s early life experiences shaped his commitment to renewable energy. After completing his master’s degree at IIT Bombay and earning a PhD in Europe, he returned to India with a vision of making a significant impact. He founded the Energy Swaraj Foundation driven by a sense of urgency to address climate change and promote localised energy solutions.

    Community Engagement

Solanki’s initiatives have empowered countless individuals, particularly women and marginalised communities. By teaching people how to create solar lanterns and providing training on solar technology, he has fostered self-reliance and sustainability in rural areas. Testimonials from beneficiaries highlight how these projects have transformed lives by providing access to clean energy.

    Environmental Impact Metrics

The impact of Solanki’s work is significant. His campaigns have resulted in millions of kilograms of carbon dioxide savings annually, contributing to global efforts against climate change. The goal to reach one billion people by 2030 underscores the ambitious nature of his mission.

    Challenges Faced

Throughout his journey, Solanki has encountered various challenges, including logistical issues and resistance from traditional energy sectors. However, his resilience shines through as he continues to advocate for sustainable practices despite these obstacles.

    Broader Context

Solanki’s work aligns with global movements for sustainability and renewable energy adoption. His advocacy extends beyond education; he actively collaborates with policymakers to influence changes that support cleaner energy solutions.
