Deepa Pawar’s life reflects the power of turning adversity into action. Raised in a tent beside a bridge in Mumbai, she went on to found Anubhuti, a grassroots organisation that has reached more than 25,000 young people from marginalised communities through education, leadership development, and community empowerment.

A Difficult Childhood

For Deepa Pawar, childhood was defined by survival.Born into the Ghisadi Gadia Lohar community, a Denotified Nomadic Tribe, Deepa grew up in a tent beside a bridge in Mumbai.

Her family depended on traditional iron-smith work, producing agricultural and construction tools from a small furnace that supported more than twenty members of their joint family.

Life was uncertain. Access to basic facilities such as water, electricity, and secure shelter remained a challenge. Like many nomadic families, they faced social exclusion and a constant struggle for dignity. These experiences shaped Deepa’s understanding of inequality and inspired her determination to create change.

Education Against Odds

Education became Deepa’s path toward a better future, but pursuing it was far from easy. Her family struggled to afford school expenses, and as the eldest girl in the family, she had the responsibility to contribute in shouldering financial, disaster-related, displacement, safety, health, education and other struggles .

However, Deepa refused to let the severe social insecurities faced by a nomadic family determine her future. She took up small jobs and joined a social organization as a youth volunteer at the age of fourteen.

Working with children from marginalized communities helped her realize that the struggles she faced were part of larger social inequalities.

Finding a Greater Purpose

Deepa’s journey into social work emerged from years of witnessing discrimination and exclusion. Instead of accepting these realities, she chose to challenge them. The resilience of her parents and the strength of her community became her greatest source of inspiration.

She began to understand that meaningful social change requires leadership from within communities themselves. This belief eventually led to the creation of Anubhuti.

Building Anubhuti

Deepa founded Anubhuti with a vision to empower Denotified Tribes, Nomadic Tribes, migrant Adivasi communities, and other marginalized groups.

Unlike organizations that focus on a single issue, Anubhuti adopts a holistic approach, recognizing the connections between education, mental health, livelihood, gender equality, and constitutional rights.

Its work focuses on: Leadership development, Education and career guidance, Gender justice, Community empowerment.

A defining feature of Anubhuti is its grassroots leadership model. Nearly 98 percent of its leadership comes from Dalit, Adivasi, Nomadic, and other marginalized communities, ensuring that those closest to the challenges lead the solutions.

Leadership and Impact

Over the past decade, Anubhuti has directly reached more than 25,000 young people from Nomadic, Adivasi, tent dwelling, rural and migrant communities. Through leadership training, scholarships, educational support, and community programs, the organization has helped many first-generation learners continue their education and develop confidence.

Many participants have gone on to pursue higher studies, become community leaders, and create opportunities for others. For Deepa, the true measure of success is seeing young people believe in their own potential and take charge of their futures.

Rediscovering Roots Proudly

One of Deepa’s most significant contributions has been helping indigenous and nomadic communities reclaim their history and identity.

She believes communities are often defined only by their struggles while their contributions and histories remain overlooked. Through Anubhuti’s initiatives, young people are encouraged to take pride in their heritage and recognize their own strength.

Deepa believes that when people understand their history, they begin to see themselves not as victims of exclusion but as agents of change.

Looking Towards the Future

Deepa envisions expanding Anubhuti’s work to reach more young people from Denotified and Nomadic Tribes through education, leadership development, and community initiatives.

From a childhood spent beside a bridge to becoming a nationally recognized grassroots leader, Deepa Pawar’s journey demonstrates how determination can transform adversity into action. Through Anubhuti, she continues to create pathways of hope, dignity, and opportunity for thousands of marginalized young people across India.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that meaningful social change often comes from those who have experienced exclusion firsthand. Deepa Pawar’s story is not just about personal success but about transforming lived experiences into collective empowerment.

Through Anubhuti, she has created a platform where marginalized communities are not merely beneficiaries but leaders of change, proving that resilience and purpose can inspire lasting transformation.
