Number Of Crimes Against Women Declined In Delhi: Union Home Ministry Tells Rajya Sabha

The Union Home Ministry on Wednesday declared that there has been a significant decline in the number of cases of crimes against women in the national capital.

“The total barbaric crimes registered during 2019 (up to September 15, 2019) were 3,838 as compared to 4,092 during the same period in 2018. Thus, there is a decline of 6.2 per cent of barbaric crimes during the current year as compared to last year,” said Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.

He further added that during the above mentioned period, the decline was also observed under non-heinous crimes such as snatching, burglary, house theft, molestation of women, kidnapping, abduction and fatal and simple accidents.

However, the ministry also stressed on the fact that due to measures taken to ensure heinous cases get reported, online registration of FIRs has been introduced that may have contributed to the higher number of cases being filed by the Delhi Police.

“As reported by the Delhi Police, a number of measures taken for facilitating reporting and registration of crime, including online registration of e-FIR for theft of motor vehicles and other properties, may have contributed to a higher number of cases registered in the NCT of Delhi,” added Kishan Reddy.

He assured that the administration collaborates with the Delhi Police and holds regular review meetings at frequent intervals at different levels to analyse the crime pattern, the progress of investigations, law and order situation and other related matters, to ensuring better policing in the capital.

“Besides these regular review meetings, some special meetings are also held to discuss and evaluate any emerging crime/law and order situation. Crime-prone areas in NCT of Delhi are dynamically identified, and police resources including pickets, foot patrolling, PCR vans and emergency response vehicles are deployed to enhance visibility, to prevent crime and to nab criminals,” the minister said.
