Uttar Pradesh is again in the news for gross medical negligence and this time because an unlicensed doctor infected over 40 people with HIV in a village in Unnao. The quack, Rajendra Kumar, allegedly used the same needle on everyone in the guise of cheaper treatment, reported Times Now.

After this report of callousness came forward, the health department lodged a complaint with the Bangarmau police station. This news came forward today after an NGO conducted a free medical camp in the village in November 2017. Children and adults, both have been found infected with HIV. The accused is on the run.

“40 positive cases have been found. If proper tests are done, at least 500 cases would come up. It is being told that the people here used to go to a quack for treatment of diseases. He used a single syringe on all of them,” Bangarmau Councillor, Sunil, told ANI.

After the issue surfaced, three medical camps were organised. Out of 400 people, 20 have been diagnosed with HIV symptoms and 20, including children, have been diagnosed with HIV positive. The rest are undergoing treatment at the Antiretroviral treated at Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Centre in Kanpur.

“We had set up health camps where these cases were found to be confirmed. We have received orders and are deciding our further course of action,” stated medical superintendent of CHC Dr Pramod Kumar Dohre.

Uttar Pradesh Health Minister, Siddharth Nath Singh assured that strict action would be taken against quacks in the city. “The matter is being investigated. Action will be taken against culprits and those who practice without a license. Since it’s a transit point, HIV carriers are likely to come there. So we’re mapping truck drivers who come there and offer treatment to them,” Singh told ANI.

UP’s Crippling Healthcare

Since last year, Uttar Pradesh has been in the news for all wrong reasons. The first instance was when over 70 children died due to lack of oxygen in Gorakhpur’s BRD hospital. The government responded by denying any responsibility.

India government’s healthcare system has been in shambles for the last 70 years and now it is further crumbling. The victims are the poorest section of the country, who are suffering because of the negligence. The Logical Indian hopes that enough attention is paid to ensure that medical help reaches these marginalised people.
