Umar Khalid Shot At Outside Constitution Club, Escapes Without Injuries

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid was attacked by an unidentified gunman outside Constitution Club of India, Rafi Marg, Delhi today. He escaped the attack, unhurt. The shooter with his accomplices escaped from the crime scene. Earlier Umar Khalid has filed a case against Ravi Pujari alleging that the got death threats from him.

According to The Indian Express, he was going to the club to attend an event called “Khauff Se Azaadi” organised by an organisation named “United Against Hate”. An eyewitness told news agency ANI, “There was an event and Umar Khalid had accompanied us. We were at a tea stall when a man in a white shirt came, pushed and opened fire at him. Khalid lost his balance and fell down and the bullet missed him. We tried to catch the man. The pistol slipped off his hands and he escaped.”

“There is an atmosphere of fear in the country, and anybody who speaks against the government is threatened,” Khalid later said. Speaking to The Quint, he said that the propaganda spread by media houses by branding people “anti-national” leaves them vulnerable to such attacks. He further said that the attack immediately reminded him of Gauri Lankesh.

Delhi Police DCP Madhur Verma says “It is being verified. Umar Khalid said that he was attacked. Somebody pounced on him and pushed, thereafter he tried to fire at Khalid. But couldn’t. According to Khalid the attacker fired in the air and was chased by people.”

The Logical Indian take

The incident happened near the Constitution Club, Delhi which is already a high-security area. In fact, the place should have been under heavier scrutiny with Independence Day preparations going on now. This incident happening at such a sensitive place and with the perpetrator fleeing makes it look fishy. We hope the perpetrator is nabbed soon.
