AP: Teacher Thrashed, Paraded Naked For Allegedly Raping & Impregnating Student

News about incidents of rape is disturbingly frequent in our country. As many as 106 women-young/old, minor/adult, become victims of sexual violence, every day. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)‘s “Crime in India 2016” report reveals that four out of every ten victims were minors.

In Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district on Tuesday, a school teacher was thrashed, stripped and paraded naked for allegedly raping and impregnating one of his students. In a video, captured by one of the passers-by, the 38-year-old man, who is an English teacher at a private school in Eluru town, can be seen forced to walk naked on a busy road.

As per reports, Rambabu had allegedly been sexually harassing the Class 10 student for the last two years. However, the issue came to light when the teenager became pregnant. It is also alleged that when he found out that the girl was pregnant, the accused gave her abortion pills. The girl’s family found out about the rape and pregnancy when she started bleeding heavily.

“He is a teacher and lured a Class 10 student with the promise of marks and raped her. He made her pregnant. She almost died of bleeding. We shifted her to hospital. Once we found out, we could not spare him,” one man can be heard saying in the video.

“They called me to talk, and then 15 people beat me up mercilessly,” NDTV quoted Rambabu, admitting to the crime. A case was registered against Rambabu, and he was arrested.

It is quite shameful that we are daily bombarded with news of rapes. Schools are supposed to be safe havens for children where they get an atmosphere to learn and grow. And in this case, a teacher himself has allegedly indulged in such a heinous act. This act deserves all condemnation and calls for quick action.

Having said that, the way the situation handled by the mob by parading him naked is also not correct. Under no circumstances should a person take law in his/her own hand.
