A couple from Lausanne, Switzerland was chased, pelted with stones and beaten with sticks by a group of young men in Fatehpur Sikri on Sunday, October 22.

Marie Droz, 24, had come to visit India on September 30 with her boyfriend Quentin Jeremy Clerc, also 24, were strolling near the railway station in Fatehpur Sikri after spending a day in Agra when the youth started following them.

“They initially passed comments, which we didn’t understand, and then forced us to stop so they could take selfies with Marie,” said Clerc to The Times of India.

As the harassment soon turned ugly and the couple was brutally attacked. Clerc was left with a fractured skull and a clot in his brain. Because of a blow to his ear, doctors said that he has also suffered hearing impairment.

Marie was left with broken bones. The couple has now been shifted to Delhi for treatment.

Adding to the inhuman treatment of the foreigners, passersby, instead of helping the bloodied couple lying on the street bruised, started taking their video.

Circle officer at Achnera (Agra district) Satyam Singh said that the foreigners “weren’t interested” in filing any police complaint. Pradeep Kumar, the in-charge of Fatehpur Sikri police station also said the same, adding that the complaint was filed by the police on its own.

Arrest

According to ANI, the police have registered an FIR against four people and one of them has been arrested on Wednesday.

Police identified the arrested suspect as the brother of Mukul, who is the main accused in instigating the attack. “We have now identified two of the accused… Search is on for Mukul,” Kumar said, reported Hindustan Times.

The Logical Indian strongly condemns the action of the mob. Foreign nationals come to visit India to see its beauty, not get harassed, molested and beaten on the roads. The Sanskrit saying ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ will have significance only when visitors feel safe in the country. We hope that all the perpetrators are brought to justice.
