In a village named Kaludi in the Barmer district of Rajasthan, 70 Dalit families were allegedly prohibited from using the basic facilities in the village by the dominant Rajpurohit families. As per reports, a case against the two upper caste youths was filed after members of Meghwal community complained against them for posting casteism comments against Dalits on social media.  “A case was registered against the youths by a person living in a nearby village. This led to a dispute between the two communities and the Rajpurohits started threatening and harassing us,” Dinesh Meghawal, one of the villagers told Indian Express.

What happened

A resident of the village named Rawat Ram from the Dalit community filed a complaint against the two boys of Rajpurohit family, claiming that they had posted derogatory comments against the Dalit community on social media. Upon receiving complaints from Rawat Ram against the dominant members, the police have registered the complaint against the members of the upper caste and assured that a thorough investigation would take place regarding this issue. However, the Rajpurohit families opposed the allegations against them.

A dispute between the two communities broke soon after. Members of Meghawal community in the were was then denied access to basic facilities like drawing water from the common well in the area, and also their children were stopped from receiving education from the schools in the village, as reported by The Hindu. This prompted Dinesh, on behalf of the Meghawal community to file a second complaint on August 16, under several sections of IPC and SC/ST Act.

Rajpurohit community denies allegations

The members from the upper caste Rajpurohit community have denied the allegations levied, calling them a “conspiracy”. Dhan Singh Rajpurohit, one of the accused, said, ” All the allegations levelled at me are false. I was not in the village when the incident happened.”

Reportedly, the police are trying to diffuse the situation. Personnel are also deployed in the village to maintain peace.

As reported by DNA, Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab C Kataria told ANI that if proven guilty, action will be taken.

The Logical Indian take

The age-old culture of oppressing Dalits in India continues to take place even in the 21st century. Despite the Indian laws protecting them, the discrimination is persistent. As per a BBC report in June 2012, the Dalit community still faces the consequences of the underdeveloped thinking of the people and experiences untouchability.

The Logical Indian hopes that justice is served by taking strict action is taken after a thorough investigation is conducted.
