More Indians Have Traveled To Other Countries This Year, Especially From TIER II Cities: Report

India is growing at a colossal rate, with making its presence in the international market. However, it has been noticed that with such development more and more people are opting to go out of the country for higher education or better jobs or simply for travelling. Foreign lands are significantly beckoning Indians, and particularly from the non-metros.  According to the Times Of India, the Visa major VFS Global processed 52.8 lakh visa applications in India in 2018. This is a 13% rise from the previous year. It has been found that people from tier-ll cities significantly preferred to view the foreign shores. Contribution from the tier-ll Indian cities has risen from the past at a noteworthy rate. For instance, cities like Jalandhar and Chandigarh saw a steep rise in people applying for the visa. Metros like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Delhi still hold the top position for visa applications.


Tier-ll cities on the roll

During the time period between 2017 and 2018, tier-ll cities have profoundly helped the number of visa applications to rise. Jalandhar has seen a steep rise of 66% in 2018 over 2017. Chandigarh held the second position as it registered a 54% rise in 2018 from 2017. Surprisingly, people from Goa and Pondicherry too applied at a proliferate rate for visa applications. Goa saw a 45% whereas, Pondicherry registered a 43% rise in visa applications in 2018 from 2017.


Countries where Indians are going  the most

In the year 2018, Indians flew mostly to Canada, Malaysia, Schengen (European nations), Thailand, US, and UK. The country received the maximum number of visa applications for these countries. However, countries which were not on people’s favourite lists did manage to climb in. Countries like the Czech Republic, Japan, Turkey, and Estonia observed a significant rise in visa applications.


Experts Say

Vinay Malhotra, VFS Global’s regional group COO for the Middle East, South Asia and China said that with the year-on-year increase in visa applications from India indicates that taking a foreign trip is no longer dominated by the rich class. He also said that the large part of the growth is seen from smaller cities as the people from these cities are willing to travel abroad and are also keen to explore off-beat destinations. According to Union tourism ministry data, Indians going to foreign lands have increased constantly for almost two decades. According to their data, nearly 2.4 crores Indians travelled out of the country. This is 9.5% from 2016’s figure which was 2.2 crore. Just to give a vivid picture, in 2000 Indians travelling abroad was 44.2 lakh. According to a joint report by CAPA Centre for Aviation and Expedia released in February 2018, it is expected that by 2025, nearly 1.4 crore leisure departure.
