Man Commits Suicide In Dehradun's BJP Office Blaming GST And Demonetisation For Failure Of His Business

The businessman from Haldwani, who entered the BJP’s office during a grievance meeting and claimed that he had consumed poison, died on December 9, in a private hospital. Prakash Pandey claimed that due to demonetisation and GST, his transport business suffered significant losses.

What happened earlier?

On January 6, Prakash Pandey entered the BJP office when state agriculture minister Subodh Uniyal was holding a public grievance meeting called “Janata Darbar”. In the meeting, he claimed that demonetisation and subsequent imposition of GST were the reason why his business had to bear major losses. He said that the situation worsened to such a point where he could not even pay his children’s school fees.

Before January, he had written letters to the Prime Minister’s office and also to the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat’s office stating his problems. Even after various letters were addressed to them, no help was extended to him. According to Pandey, he had “no option left” for him “but to consume poison”, as reported by The Indian Express.

In a letter directed to Uttarakhand’s CM, he stated that before demonetisation and GST he had a bank transaction of 60 lakh to 1 crore a year. But later the transactions became nil.

What happened in the BJP office?

Prakash was thrown out of the BJP office as they claimed that he was doing “drama” inside the meeting. BJP’s Uniyal had said that the incident “looks politically motivated”, and the Congress ministers have been blaming the BJP’s “false policies” for the “tragic” incident.

But in the midst of this blame game, Prakash lost his life.

Pandey was taken to a government hospital in Dehradun from the BJP office, where it was confirmed that he had consumed poison. He was later shifted to a private hospital. He was declared critical and was admitted to the ICU. He died on Tuesday afternoon.

The Logical Indian Take

This incident sheds light on the financial crisis that the general public had to endure thanks to demonetisation and GST. Prakash was a well-off trader who became a victim of these financial policies. Now, think about the people that were never financially strong.

The Logical Indian sympathises with Prakash and his family. We urge the government to look into these matters urgently.
