A 22-year-old woman was burnt alive by her husband and in-laws in Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh after she went to Police complaining her husband for giving Triple Talaq. The Police refused to register an FIR into the matter and asked her to continue staying with her husband.

Burnt Over Complaint Against Triple Talaq

The victim father said that she was given triple talaq by her 26-year-old husband Nafees on phone on August 6. When Sayeeda approached the police, they did not lodge the complaint and instead spoke to the couple and asked Sayeeda to stay with Nafees.

However, as per their daughter, Nafees asked Sayeeda to go away as he had already given her talaq. The argument was blown into a spat with Nafees thrashing his wife with the help of his family members.

“My grandfather Azizullah, grandmother Haseena, and aunts Gudiya, Nadira came. Father held my mother by her hair and thrashed her, my aunts Nadira and Gudiya poured kerosene and grandfather Azizullah and grandmother Haseena lit a match,” said the daughter, as per The Times of India report.

Sayeeda’s body has been sent for autopsy. An FIR has been registered against Nafees and his family members on charges of dowry harassment, murder, and dowry prohibition act. The reason behind not registering a case on the complaint of Triple Talaq will also be probed.

Triple Talaq Bill

On July 30, the Rajya Sabha passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019. This bill seeks to ban the practice of instant triple talaq. This bill recognises the declaration of triple talaq a cognizable offence, which may attract three years imprisonment with a fine. It means that the police can arrest an accused without a warrant.

Opposition leaders, particularly from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) say that the bill is ‘partisan, unconstitutional and arbitrary’. Leader of Opposition, Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “This Bill is called The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill. It is a misnomer. In my view, the real intention is the destruction of Muslim families.

He further added, “If Muslims are killed by mob lynching, there are law and order implications. But here you are trying to burn Muslim households with the lamp of their own house… so nobody will have any problem.”
