A Dalit groom in the Biroda village of Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur district was prohibited from entering a temple by some residents. The incident took place when Sandeep Gawale, the groom, was on his way to worship at the temple before his ‘baraat’ procession’s departure. 

Despite having taken prior permission to enter the temple, the accused had locked up the entrance of the temple on Thursday, November 21, which was the wedding day. Gawale alleged that the gates were locked on the order of the trustee of the temple.

“The miscreants in the village do not allow us to enter the temple because we come from a lower caste. We had sought prior approval from the Collector too for arranging the wedding at the temple, but still this happened,” he told ANI.

The complaint was filed by the family and was received by the Collector. Village authorities have assured prompt action.

“A complaint was received by the Collector that the miscreants did not allow the Dalit family to enter the temple. The Collector had directed the police officials to take appropriate action against those found guilty,” Sub Divisional Magistrate Kashiram Badole confirmed.

SHO of the Lalbagh Police Station Bikram Singh Bomania promised to provide protection to the family and has also sent a team to check the spot around the temple after the complaint was filed.
