Finland’s transport minister, Sanna Marin will become the country’s next Prime Minister, making her the youngest in the world to hold the post.

The 34-year-old Marin is all set to become the world’s youngest prime minister, once she takes office. She is also the country’s third female minister.

The Social Democratic Party which emerged as the largest party after the April election voted 32-29 in favour of Marin against rival Antti Lindman to take reins of the government’s top post.

Her appointment comes after the incumbent – Antti Rinne tendered his resignation after a key coalition partner – the Center Party, withdrew its support claiming lack of trust following his handling of a postal strike.

Rinne’s resignation led to the fall out of a coalition of the Social Democrats and the Centre Party and three other junior partners.

On Sunday, Social Democrats and the four other coalition parties said they are committed to the government program agreed upon after the April election and will continue in Marin’s new government.

The new government will still have a comfortable majority of 117 seats at the 200-seat Eduskunta or Parliament. After the vote count, Marin told the reporters that a lot of work has to be done to rebuild trust.

“I have never thought about my age or gender, I think of the reasons I got into politics and those things for which we have won the trust of the electorate,” she added.

According to Helsingin Sanomat and the Ilta- Sanomat tabloid, biggest daily in Finland, Marin will be the youngest prime minister after the Ukraine Prime Minister – Oleksiy Honcharuk (35) and New Zealand Prime Minister – Jacinda Ardern 35.

Four other parties in Finland’s coalition government are also led by women. Leader of the Left Alliance is Li Anderson, 32, Centre Party is controlled by Katri Kumuni, 32, The Swedish People’s Party is headed by Anna-Maja Henriksson, 55, and Green League is led by Maria Ohisalo, 34.
