On June 19, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered departmental proceedings against a doctor and suspended another based on reports of negligence in attending to an infant at a government hospital in Bareilly.

After the death of the four-day-old girl, Dr Kamlendra Swaroop Gupta, the Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) of the men’s wing at the government hospital, was suspended. Departmental proceedings have been ordered against Dr Alka Sharma, CMS, women’s wing.

The Incident

“A critically ill child was brought to the men’s wing of the hospital, where paediatricians were available. Instead of stabilising the child, her family was sent to the women’s wing, from where the child was sent back,” India Today quoted officials as saying.

The four-day-old girl, who was born at a private hospital on June 15, was brought to the government hospital in Bareilly by her parents after she had trouble breathing. However, after being shuttled from one wing of the hospital to another, the baby girl lost her life.

The deceased baby’s parents alleged that she died after they were made to run from one wing of the hospital to another for more than three hours.

“She was not drinking milk. People suggested me to admit her to the hospital. When we went to a doctor at the hospital, they told me to go to the women’s ward. When I went there, they said there was no bed available,” the infant’s mother told ANI.

According to Women department chief Alka Sharma, there was no bed available when the infant was brought to the hospital. She said that there were only four beds with eight children on them.

However, men’s department head Dr Gupta said that he has given clear order that every patient must be admitted. “She (the mother) kept wandering in the hospital but did not go to the emergency ward. Had she visited there, we would have saved the girl,” he said.
