Hyderabad: Six-Yr-Old Girl’s Leg Amputated Due To Gross Medical Negligence

Gross medical negligence allegedly led to a six-year-old girl’s leg being amputated by the doctors of Neelima Hospital in Sanathnagar, Hyderabad.

Although the incident took place last month, it only came to light recently after the police allegedly attempted to hush-up the case as TRS MLC Palla Rajeshwar Reddy is one of the Directors of the hospital.

The Incident

On May 13, the girl, Akshara, injured her leg when a cupboard fell on her, while she was playing in her home. She was immediately rushed to Neelima Hospitals by her parents – Chandrashekhar and Pavani.

Doctors discharged Akshara the same evening after performing basic treatment like cleaning the wound and wrapping a bandage. However, the girl later complained of pain in her leg.

On noticing that her leg has turned blue, her parents took her to the same hospital again. When the doctors allegedly refused to treat her, they took her to Yashoda Hospital in Somajiguda, where the family was told that her leg was infected and had to be amputated.

The panic-stricken family took her to several hospitals, and finally had to give in when doctors at KIMS hospital said that amputation was the only option if they wanted to save the girl.

On May 25, the parents lodged a complaint with the Sanath Nagar police, alleging medical negligence.

A case was registered under section IPC 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life). However, The News Minute reported that the police refused to share any details regarding the case, calling it an ‘old case’ raked up by the local media.

However, Balanagar DCP PV Padmaja, said that a case has been filed. “The case is under investigation. We have to wait for a report from the Telangana Medical Council to ascertain if the hospital indeed was at fault,” she said.
