The Andhra Pradesh government has selected the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) to help them combat corruption in the state administration. The institute would analyse the structural issues in the government departments leading to corruption and recommend measures to tackle them.

The focus would be on government departments like revenue, police, municipal administration and registration, which have become synonymous with corruption.

“The IIM-A would help us identify the structural issues in Mandal revenue offices, registration offices, town- planning wing in civic bodies and also the police that are leading to corruption. Based on the inputs, the government will initiate corrective action to eliminate corruption,” a senior bureaucrat told India Today

Chief Minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has stressed upon eliminating corruption since he took over the office in May this year. In a high-level review meeting, he said that the government would fight against corruption aggressively. He also announced that the AP Anti-Corruption Bureau would be deployed in full force across the state to curb corruption at all levels.

IIM Ahmedabad is expected to work on reducing citizen-official interface in government offices, use information technology-based systems, curtail discretionary power and arbitrariness of bureaucrats and publish the names of the corrupt on public websites.

“Such measures will help curb graft, but a drastic measure like making the risk of corruption much higher than instant gratification holds the key,” the senior bureaucrat said. It is expected that the government may suitably amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, based on the institute’s (IIM-A) report, for a complete crackdown on corruption.
