A 50-year-old woman in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district was allegedly gang raped and murdered in her house on Monday, December 2.
Three men are alleged to have committed the crime when the woman was alone in her house in G Vemavaram village. While the police have arrested one of the suspects, they are on the lookout for the others.
Adnan Nayeem Asmi, District Superintendent of Police, who had visited the crime scene, said that the two suspects would be arrested within 24 hours.
“The accused sprinkled red chilli powder all over the house of the woman so as to mislead the dog squad,” a police official was quoted by Hindustan Times.
The woman had been living alone in the house as her husband and son had passed away, and her daughter was living in Hyderabad.
The incident comes in the wake of a series of rapes that shook the country in the past week. On Wednesday, November 27, a 27-year-old Veterinarian was gang-raped and murdered on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The incident had sparked large-scale protests across the country.
Meanwhile, M. Sucharita, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister, made a surprise visit to an all-woman police station in Guntur district. The Minister had received complaints from some women who said that the police were not responding to their complaints.
The Minister also raised concerns over the unresponsiveness and said that the crimes against women were continuing. She also asked the police to remain alert and to take strict action against those involved in crimes against women.
