An 18-year-old Class 11 student in Jharkhand’s Gumla district was allegedly abducted while returning home from school on September 8 and taken in a Bolero to the Arangi forest, where police said she was kept overnight.
The incident reportedly took place between Nagfeni and Podha in the Sisai police station area. According to police and multiple reports, the alleged abduction involved senior student Biriya Oraon and four other youths. The student’s friends alerted her family after she went missing, following which her family approached the Sisai police.
Police launched a search and rescued her safely from the forest at around 4 am the next morning. Five accused Biriya Oraon, Munna Oraon, Birendra Oraon, Rajesh Oraon and Ashish Lohra have been arrested and sent to judicial custody, while the Bolero allegedly used in the incident was seized.
Police have cited one-sided love as a suspected motive, although the investigation is ongoing. Some local reports have also raised an allegation of sexual assault against the main accused, but Sisai police station in-charge Neeraj Kumar said the matter can only be established after the student’s medical examination and statement.
Student Taken On Way Home
The alleged abduction took place at around 3.30 pm on September 8, as the student was returning home from school on a bicycle through the Nagfeni-Podha stretch in Sisai. Police allege that Biriya Oraon, 18, who was reportedly a senior student from the same school, approached her along with four other youths and forcibly took her into a Bolero.
Investigators believe the vehicle had been arranged beforehand, suggesting that the alleged act may have been planned rather than spontaneous. The student was subsequently taken towards the Arangi forest, where police said she was kept overnight.
Two friends who were reportedly with her noticed that she had suddenly disappeared and alerted her family. Local reports said the friends also noticed her bicycle and school bag left behind on the route, prompting the family to suspect that something serious had happened. The family then approached the Sisai police, leading to an immediate search operation.
Police Trace Her To Forest
Following the family’s complaint, Sisai police began searching for the student and traced her to the Arangi forest. She was rescued safely at around 4 am, according to the latest reports. Police subsequently arrested Biriya Oraon, who investigators identified as the alleged main accused.
Based on information obtained during questioning, four other alleged accomplices Munna Oraon, 26, Birendra Oraon, 30, Rajesh Oraon, 22, and Ashish Lohra, 20 were arrested from their homes in the Arangi Kachhapara area. Police also seized the Bolero allegedly used in the incident.
All five accused were subsequently sent to judicial custody. Police station in-charge Neeraj Kumar confirmed that a case had been registered and said the accused and the student belonged to the same school. He further said those responsible would not be spared and would face legal action.
Police have cited one-sided love as the suspected motive, with reports stating that Biriya allegedly had feelings for the student. However, the motive remains part of the ongoing investigation and should not be treated as a court-established fact.

The Gumla case raises serious questions about how society understands rejection, consent and personal boundaries. If the police allegations are established, describing the incident simply as a consequence of “one-sided love” risks reducing a serious alleged act of coercion to a romantic narrative. No expression of affection gives anyone the right to control another person’s choices, force them into a vehicle or restrict their freedom.
At the same time, allegations including those relating to sexual assault reported by some local outlets must be handled responsibly and established through due process. Sisai police station in-charge Neeraj Kumar has specifically said that the medical examination and the student’s statement will be important before conclusions are drawn on that aspect of the case.
