A 22-year-old man, identified as Vansh Dedha, was stabbed 17 times and killed near Gyan Vatika School in Delhi’s Mandawali on Thursday evening, September 10, following an altercation with two men, police said. A PCR call reporting the stabbing was received at around 7:54 pm, after which police reached the spot and rushed Dedha to Max Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
According to preliminary police findings, Keshav Kumar, 22, a resident of Karawal Nagar, allegedly chased Dedha with an associate and repeatedly attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon. East Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajeev Kumar said the two allegedly fled the spot after the attack.
A murder case has been registered at Mandawali police station, Kumar has been arrested, and police have identified the second alleged assailant and are trying to apprehend him. Investigators have recovered the alleged knife, clothes reportedly worn during the incident and the motorcycle allegedly used by the accused.
CCTV footage and technical surveillance are being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events. Police are also probing personal enmity as a possible motive, with reports suggesting that Kumar may have suspected Dedha of being in a relationship with his sister. However, this remains an allegation under investigation and has not been established in court.
A Violent Confrontation Near School
The incident unfolded in Mandawali on Thursday evening, when a confrontation between Dedha and two men allegedly escalated into a fatal attack. Police said Dedha was chased near Gyan Vatika School before being repeatedly stabbed with a sharp-edged weapon.
His injuries were so severe that he could not be saved. A medical examination found 17 stab wounds on his body. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Rajeev Kumar said the preliminary enquiry indicated that “following an altercation” Keshav Kumar and his associate allegedly chased Dedha and attacked him before fleeing the area.
The police response began after the 7:54 pm PCR call. Officers reached the location and took Dedha to Max Hospital, where he was declared dead. The murder case is now being investigated through multiple strands of evidence, including CCTV footage, technical surveillance and physical evidence recovered from the accused.
Police have taken possession of the motorcycle allegedly used by the suspects and recovered the knife and clothes reportedly worn during the incident. These items are expected to help investigators establish the sequence of events and determine the individual roles of those allegedly involved.
Motive Still Under Investigation
The suspected motive has emerged as one of the key aspects of the investigation. Reports by The Times of India said police suspect that Kumar believed Dedha was in a relationship with his sister, and that the alleged relationship may have triggered the confrontation. Police, however, have described the motive as part of their ongoing investigation into personal enmity, rather than as an established fact.
The distinction matters because the investigation is still unfolding. Police are examining CCTV footage around the school and analysing technical evidence to establish how the confrontation began, whether Dedha was chased and what happened immediately before and after the stabbing.
One accused, Keshav Kumar, has been arrested, while police said the second alleged assailant had been identified and efforts were underway to trace him. Some later online reports have claimed that two people were apprehended, but the police account carried by multiple established news outlets on September 11 continued to identify Kumar as the arrested accused and the second man as being sought.
The status should therefore be treated cautiously until Delhi Police issue a clear updated confirmation. For Dedha’s family, the circumstances surrounding his killing remain a devastating unanswered question.
A Hindi media report also carried allegations from family members linking the killing to an older personal dispute, but those claims are being investigated and have not been independently established. As investigators piece together CCTV, forensic and technical evidence, the focus remains on determining exactly what led to the confrontation and who was responsible for the fatal attack.

The death of a 22-year-old following an alleged personal dispute is a grim reminder of how quickly conflict can escalate when anger replaces conversation and restraint. Whatever the eventual findings of the investigation, no disagreement over relationships, family matters or personal grievances should end in violence.
At the same time, allegations about a relationship or motive must not become a substitute for evidence, particularly while a murder investigation is still underway. The priority now should be a fair and thorough investigation, accountability based on evidence, and support for a grieving family that has lost a young life.
