Iran Says It Seized American Underwater Drone Near Hormuz as US Cites Technical Failure

Iran has claimed that its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy captured a US unmanned underwater drone near the entrance of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on September 8, describing it as one of the US military’s most modern autonomous submarines.

Iranian state media identified the vessel as the Dive-LD, made by US defence technology company Anduril Industries, and released footage purportedly showing the vehicle after it was recovered.

The US military, however, has acknowledged losing an underwater drone but disputed Iran’s account of a military capture, saying the vessel had malfunctioned more than a day earlier while surveying regional waters in support of ongoing operations. US Central Command spokesperson Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins said the drone was an older model that did not collect sensitive information or carry classified sonar or radar equipment.

Anduril also confirmed the loss, describing the Dive-LD as an “attritable autonomous system” designed to operate in dangerous environments where losing the vehicle is an expected possibility. The incident comes amid a sharp escalation between Washington and Tehran around the Strait, with Iran and the US trading attacks on military and maritime targets.

Iran-US Accounts Diverge

Iran’s IRGC Navy said its forces captured the unmanned vessel during a “complex intelligence and operational” mission at dawn near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials said the drone was equipped with advanced underwater technology and had been delivered to the US military fleet in 2025.

Iranian media subsequently identified it as Anduril’s Dive-LD, a large autonomous underwater vehicle designed to conduct missions without a crew. Anduril’s published specifications say the platform is about 5.8 metres long, around 1.2 metres wide, can remain operational for up to 10 days and dive to depths of approximately 6,000 metres, or nearly 19,700 feet.

Its modular design allows it to be fitted with different equipment for tasks such as surveillance, seabed mapping, mine detection and other underwater operations. Iranian state-linked outlets, including Fars News and IRIB, circulated photographs and video of the vessel being recovered, presenting the incident as an intelligence success.

However, the footage does not independently establish whether Iranian forces disabled the drone or simply recovered it after it became stranded. Reuters reported that it could not independently verify the circumstances of the alleged capture.

The Pentagon has offered a markedly different account. Navy Capt. Hawkins said the underwater drone had “malfunctioned more than a day ago” while conducting surveillance of regional waters. According to the US military, the vessel was an older model and did not carry classified sonar or radar equipment or collect sensitive data.

DefenceScoop reported that the drone had effectively been left “dead in the water” for more than a day before Iranian forces recovered it. The US position therefore seeks to distinguish the loss of the vehicle from the much more consequential claim that Iran successfully defeated and seized a highly sensitive American military system.

Anduril has similarly played down the significance of the loss. A company spokesperson said Dive-LD was an “attritable autonomous system”, meaning it was designed from the outset for dangerous missions where the loss of the vehicle could be anticipated.

The reported cost of an individual Dive-LD has been around $2.5 million, considerably less than the cost of conventional crewed naval platforms. This approach reflects a broader shift in modern warfare towards deploying autonomous systems that can enter hazardous areas without putting military personnel directly at risk.

A Wider Strait Showdown

The dispute over the drone comes as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have reached a dangerous new level. The waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s most important routes for oil and gas shipments.

Any disruption can therefore have consequences far beyond the US-Iran confrontation, potentially affecting global energy prices and supply chains. The reported drone incident followed US strikes on five Iranian oil tankers, which Washington said were linked to an Iranian network supporting the IRGC.

Iran subsequently launched attacks against US-linked maritime targets and fired ballistic missiles towards a US military facility in Jordan. Jordan’s military said its air-defence systems detected 20 incoming ballistic missiles and intercepted 18, while two struck unpopulated areas.

Iran has also claimed attacks against vessels attempting to pass through the Strait, further raising fears over the safety of commercial shipping. Against this backdrop, the presence of an American autonomous underwater vehicle near Hormuz is significant even if the US account of its malfunction is ultimately correct.

Such systems can potentially map underwater terrain, monitor vessels, search for mines and gather information without exposing sailors to danger. The incident also highlights an emerging challenge in warfare: as autonomous systems become more common, the line between surveillance, deterrence and direct military confrontation can become increasingly difficult to define.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The competing claims over the US underwater drone offer another reminder of how quickly military technology is changing and how easily an incident involving an unmanned machine can become part of a much larger confrontation. Whether Iran genuinely intercepted the Dive-LD or recovered a malfunctioning vehicle, the episode should not be viewed simply as a contest over who scored a tactical victory.

The more worrying reality is the continuing escalation around the Strait of Hormuz, where military action can threaten civilians, commercial crews, energy supplies and countries far beyond the immediate conflict. Advanced autonomous systems may reduce the risk to soldiers, but they do not reduce the human consequences of war.
