A 47-year-old Kanpur trader, Amit Kumar Gupta, died on September 7, two days after he was allegedly assaulted by four men near Om Chauraha in the Kakadeo area for objecting to one of them urinating in public. According to police and media reports, Gupta was returning from his shop around 11 pm on September 5 when he confronted the men, who were allegedly drinking at the roadside.
The confrontation escalated, with the four men allegedly attacking him and repeatedly striking his head with bricks and stones. CCTV footage reportedly captured the assault. Gupta suffered a severe head injury, was hospitalised and never regained consciousness.
Police said he was initially brought to hospital in connection with what was described as an accident, but after his death, CCTV footage and local inquiries pointed towards an assault.
DCP Central Atul Srivastava said four police teams are working to identify and trace the accused, while several people have been questioned. As of September 9, no arrests had been reported. Gupta’s family has demanded immediate action and questioned why arrests have not been made despite the reported CCTV evidence.
Assault Captured On CCTV
The incident reportedly occurred near Om Chauraha, a busy area with shops and residential establishments, at around 11 pm. Gupta, who lived in Naveen Nagar, was allegedly returning after closing his shop when he saw one of the four men urinating by the roadside.
He objected, reportedly pointing out that the area was close to homes and a market. According to reports citing his family and police, the disagreement soon became an argument, following which the four men allegedly surrounded him and attacked him.
CCTV footage reportedly shows Gupta being assaulted and falling to the ground, while people nearby attempted to intervene. The attackers allegedly fled after the assault. Gupta sustained a serious head injury and was taken for medical treatment.
His family later shifted him to another private hospital as his condition remained critical. He died on the evening of September 7 without regaining consciousness. Police have since collected the CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
DCP Atul Srivastava said the police are working to establish the identities of those seen in the footage and trace them. The case has been registered at Kakadeo police station against unidentified persons under relevant legal provisions.
Family Seeks Justice, Protection
Gupta’s death has left his family demanding arrests and raising concerns about their safety. India Today reported that his wife, Shalini Gupta, and his sister, Shivani, expressed fear because the alleged attackers had not been arrested.
His wife also reportedly said the family was worried about using the same road and concerned about the safety of their children. Police, meanwhile, maintain that the investigation is active. DCP Central Atul Srivastava said four teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the suspects, while investigators have questioned several people.
The police have also examined CCTV footage and conducted local inquiries following Gupta’s death. A local report by Amar Ujala further claimed that the assault occurred around 300 metres from the Pandunagar police outpost, prompting questions about policing in the area.
However, these concerns remain part of the wider public and family response and should not be treated as evidence of police negligence unless established through the investigation.
The case also bears similarities to another Kanpur incident reported earlier this year, in which an e-rickshaw driver was allegedly killed after objecting to youths urinating in a lane, highlighting how seemingly minor public disputes can escalate into fatal violence.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
A disagreement over public urination should never become a justification for violence, let alone result in the loss of a life. The Kanpur case is a tragic reminder of how quickly everyday confrontations can spiral when anger replaces restraint and dialogue.
At the same time, the investigation must be allowed to establish exactly what happened, identify those responsible and determine individual culpability through due process. Gupta’s family deserves answers, timely action and a sense of security, while the wider community needs to recognise that dignity in public spaces cannot be protected through aggression.
