Pilot Suffers Cardiac Arrest On Flight Full Of Passengers, Lands Plane Safely

An IndiGo Airlines pilot despite suffering a massive heart attack mid-air, managed to land a plane full of passengers at their destination, safely. The event happened on Saturday evening, on an IndiGo Airlines flight travelling from Imphal to Kolkata.

According to Times of India report, Captain Silvio Diaz Acosta, a 63-year-old pilot of Cuban origin,  was about to land the flight at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata when he began sweating profusely and complained of acute chest pain to his co-pilot. With remarkable calmness, Captain Acosta and his co-pilot managed to land the plane successfully at 4:45 pm.

Airport officials told News18 that immediately following the touchdown, Captain Acosta was rushed to the medical unit inside the Airport where he was diagnosed with Cardiac arrest using the ECG report. He was quickly referred to the nearby Charnock Hospital.

“His condition was serious, and he was immediately taken to the emergency ward. Electrocardiography (ECG) was done, wherein we found Myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack. It happens when blood flow decreases or completely stops to a part of the heart. Later angioplasty was done, the stent was placed. He is now recovering,” cardiologist Dr Satrajit Samanta told News18.

“I have never witnessed such an incident. The fact that the cardiac arrest happened midair and he still landed the flight safely is a miracle. He is fine and out of danger, but we have kept him under strict observation. Today, his family members will reach India from Havana. Hopefully, he will be discharged in two-three days,” the doctor added.

The cardiologist attending to him told the media that while he was being operated, the Captain suffered from Ventricular Tachycardia and to resuscitate him, they had to give him electric shocks twice.

The Logical Indian appreciates the pilot’s and the co-pilot’s handling of a critical situation and hopes that Captain Acosta makes a fast and complete recovery.
