A group of Muslim youth in Mangalore helped a Hindu family cremate a 52-year-old unmarried woman, Bhavani, who died after suffering a cardiac arrest on Saturday. The incident happened at Janavasati Colony in Puttur Taluk’s Vidyapura. Krishna, her brother, requested the relatives to help in arranging funds for her last rites, but they refused, as reported by The Times of India.

A beat constable, Manjunath Gowda rushed to the scene after hearing about the episode. Krishna then expressed his financial misery to him, after which the constable sought help from a few of Bhavani’s neighbours. He also called various organisations seeking aid, as reported by The Hindu.

Two hours later, Shaukath, Hamza, Nazeer, Riyaz and Farooq arrived from Vidyapura and started to collect funds from people to help the family. They managed to accumulate ₹7,000 from the locals including the constable.

Furthermore, Anganwaadi teacher Rajeshwari, locals Safia and Zubaida also volunteered to clean the body before it was shifted to the Puttur Cremation ground in an ambulance.

Farooq said, “We did not do it for publicity. We came forward to help, not considering the caste or religion of the deceased. We wanted to send a message that the dead should not be denied the last rites.”

The Logical Indian Take

We applaud the youths and the constable for their selfless deed. It is heartwarming to see people come forward to help others irrespective of religion, caste and creed.
