In an act of generosity, an elderly couple from Kerala has donated their Rs 3 crore worth property to the government to turn it into a rehabilitation centre.

Retired school teachers, N Kamalasan (77) and C K Sarojini (71) were worried about the fate of their intellectually challenged daughter, Priya. The uncertainty of who would look after her plagued the couple for long. Such concerns led them to donate their building and 83 cents (1 cent=435.60 square feet) of land in Kayila village in Kollam district to the Kerala Government. Reportedly, the house which has a market value of Rs 3 crore, upon the couple’s request, will be turned into a centre for differently-abled women.

According to The Indian Express, the Kerala social welfare minister KK Shylaja, upon accepting the request, said that the house would soon be transformed into a rehabilitation centre. Additionally, the centre will be named after the couple’s daughter- ‘Priya Home For Mentally Challenged Women,’ which will not only house Priya but 50 other women as well.

Priya’s parents were reluctant to trust their relatives with the custody of their 37-year-old daughter. They have also written a will, offering the government to take control of their two other houses and 15 cents of land in Kozhikode, which has a market value of Rs 4 Crore, and convert them into rehabilitation centres for the differently-abled, reported the daily.

Kamalasan, while talking to The Indian Express said, “The government action has come as a big relief. The government has promised to make the house ready for challenged women. We will have nothing to worry about. Our daughter can be quickly moved to that house. She can live in a homely atmosphere. Otherwise, she may have had to wander after our death.”

He added, “I wanted to bring their woes to the public sphere. I hope wealthy families come forward to make such homes ready for their intellectually-challenged wards as well as for others from economically weaker sections.”

The Logical Indian Take

Many parents of differently-abled individuals pass away with the pain of not knowing the fate of their children or who would take care of their children.  We need more exemplary initiatives like this Kerala couple who walked an extra mile to not only think of their child’s future but for others like her as well.

The Logical Indian applauds the parents for their voluntary initiative.
