In 2015, following his retirement as a government school principal in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Shankar Lal Garg purchased twenty-two acres of land at Keshar Parvat on the Malwa Plateau. Located forty kilometers from the city, the property originally presented a prime commercial opportunity to construct a private college, a project that promised significant financial returns and social acclaim.
However, as Dr. Garg surveyed the dry, rocky landscape, he realized that building another concrete institution did not align with his core values. At sixty-seven years old, when most individuals seek restful retirement, he chose to forego monetary profit and embark on an ambitious journey to turn the desolate terrain into a self-sustaining forest.

Overcoming Scarcity, Fire, and Skepticism
The environmental conditions on the Malwa Plateau posed severe obstacles to ecological restoration. Renowned for its scorching summer temperatures and acute water scarcity, the hill’s rocky surface made conventional digging nearly impossible beyond five or six inches. Local villagers openly doubted his vision, insisting that no vegetation had ever survived on the barren rocks. Undeterred by skepticism, Dr. Garg manually added external topsoil and planted his first batch of one hundred saplings, watering them daily. Gradually, the developing roots fractured the underlying rock layers, establishing a firm foothold in the terrain.

The endeavor faced a catastrophic test on a night in 2019, when an unexpected fire swept through Keshar Parvat, reducing approximately one thousand mature trees to smouldering ash. Though heartbroken by the severe loss, Dr. Garg refused to abandon his mission. Having already overcome the frustration of three dry borewells by purchasing daily water tankers at substantial personal expense, he immediately returned to planting. He systematically expanded his efforts without relying on artificial fertilizers or chemical pesticides, allowing natural ecological processes to guide the regeneration.

A Biodiversity Haven and Environmental Revival
Over eight years of continuous effort, Keshar Parvat has evolved into a dense, multi-layered forest housing more than forty thousand trees, achieving an impressive survival rate of ninety-five percent. The sanctuary features indigenous timber and shade species such as Banyan, Neem, Peepal, Teakwood, Rosewood, and Sandalwood, alongside fruit-bearing varieties including Mango and Guava. Demonstrating the adaptability of natural systems, Dr. Garg also successfully introduced international flora, cultivating Italian olives, Australian avocados, Mexican dates, and even harvesting delicate saffron blossoms despite the region’s warm climate.

The ecological transformation of Keshar Parvat has altered the local environment in measurable ways. The forest’s canopy and soil retention have effectively recharged regional groundwater aquifers, raising the local water table from over six hundred feet down to two hundred fifty feet and eliminating his dependency on external water tankers. Wildlife has also returned to the once-abandoned hillock, with jackals, wild pigs, and over thirty bird species establishing stable habitats. Today, Dr. Garg continues his work at seventy-five, urging every individual to take responsibility for environmental health by nurturing at least one tree during their lifetime.
