Dhordo village in Gujarat’s Kutch district has become fully solar-powered, joining three other solar villages in the state. Recognised globally by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation as the ‘Best Tourism Village,’ Dhordo’s 81 homes now generate clean energy with a total solar capacity of 177 kilowatts.
This project, under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, is expected to produce 2.95 lakh units of electricity annually, saving villagers about ₹16,064 per household and generating over ₹13 lakh annually in combined savings and surplus power income.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally dedicated this achievement on 20 September at the ‘Samudra Se Samriddhi’ event in Bhavnagar, highlighting Gujarat’s role in renewable energy leadership.
Dhordo’s Solar Power Revolution: Clean Energy for Every Home
Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Dhordo has solar panels installed on all 81 homes, allowing residents to generate their own electricity and sell surplus power to the grid. With a combined installed capacity of 177 kW, the village is projected to generate nearly 2.95 lakh units of electricity annually.
Miyan Hussain, Sarpanch of Dhordo, credited the progress to strong leadership from the central and state governments. He said the solarisation project has reduced electricity bills significantly and brought joy to the community by fostering economic upliftment.

Dhordo is Gujarat’s fourth solar-powered village after Modhera, Sukhi, and Masali, showcasing the state’s continued commitment to sustainable development and renewable energy adoption. Government subsidies and bank loans have made this green transition affordable for villagers, empowering rural communities.
