Delhi Raises E-Rickshaw Minimum Fare To ₹20, Impacting Thousands Of Daily Commuters Across City

Delhi has approved a revised ₹20 minimum e-rickshaw fare following rising costs and consensus among stakeholders, balancing driver relief with commuter affordability concerns.

Following a high-level meeting with Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh on Wednesday, the Federation of Electric Vehicles has announced a hike in the minimum fare for e-rickshaws to Rs 20. The decision, driven by soaring inflation and a long-standing stagnation in price rates, was reached through a consensus between drivers, dealers, and manufacturers.

While the move aims to provide financial relief to thousands of e-rickshaw operators, it marks a significant shift for daily commuters who previously paid a base fare of Rs 10.

Financial Strain and New Fare Structures

For years, the e-rickshaw has been the backbone of last-mile connectivity in Delhi, with drivers typically charging Rs 10 for the first two kilometres and Rs 5 for every subsequent kilometre. However, the Federation highlighted that these rates are no longer sustainable given the rising costs of living and vehicle maintenance.

During the meeting, stakeholders emphasised that the “status quo” was pushing many drivers into debt. Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh acknowledged these grievances, facilitating the dialogue that led to the new Rs 20 minimum. Officials stated that the adjustment is a necessary step to ensure the economic viability of green transport in the capital.

The Road to the Price Hike

This transition comes after months of quiet protests and representations by e-rickshaw unions who argued that while fuel-based transport fares had seen adjustments, the electric sector remained overlooked. The e-rickshaw ecosystem, which includes not just the drivers but a vast network of local manufacturers and dealers, has been grappling with the increased cost of spare parts and battery replacements.

This meeting marks one of the first major collaborative efforts between the Delhi government and the electric vehicle federation to formalise a fare structure that reflects the current economic climate, moving away from the unorganised pricing of the past.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that for a city to breathe and grow, its most vulnerable workers the e-rickshaw drivers must be able to earn a dignified living. While a fare hike may pinch the pockets of the common man, it is essential to approach this with empathy for the drivers who battle inflation daily to keep our city moving sustainably.

We advocate for a balance where green mobility remains affordable for the public without exploiting the hands behind the wheel. A harmonious society is built when we recognize the struggles of our service providers and support fair wages.
