Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally broken his silence on the increasing instances of cow protector violence across the nation.

Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad on 29 June, Modi invoked the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi to condemn the acts of violence by gau rakhaks.

“Let’s all work together. Let’s create the India of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams. Let’s create an India our freedom fighters would be proud of,” the Prime Minister said. “No person in this nation has the right to take the law in his or her own hands … We are a land of nonviolence. It is our way of living and killing human beings in the name of gau bhakti is not acceptable.”

The Prime Minister is currently on a two-day visit to Gujarat.

Beginning with Dadri in 2015, several instances of mob violence have taken place in recent months. The perpetrators of these actions were cow vigilantes (gau rakshaks), acting against cow slaughter and beef. These mobs managed to create an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness whilst killing several citizens.

These incidents took place across India, including Assam, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Odisha, Kashmir, Bihar, and Delhi.

The Prime Minister’s silence on the incidents was widely criticised. Furthermore, some ministers’ comments further aggravated the situation. Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, for example, was quoted by The Indian Express as saying, “There is no atmosphere of fear or insecurity among minorities. Some forces want the agenda of destruction to dominate the agenda of development; action being taken against them.”

When Hundreds Of People Turned Blind And Saw Nothing

On Thursday a 16-year-old Muslim boy, returning home from Eid shopping with his three brothers, was killed in a brutal assault by a mob of about 20 men on a train. As horrifying the act was, equally horrifying is the collective silence of those who watched the incident and are silent over the issue. #ItMatters

On Wednesday, 28 June, several nonviolent demonstrations (Not In My Name) were held across the country to express solidarity with the victims of lynchings in the country.

Protection of cows and cow vigilantism are tools that are been used to aggrandise political and religious enforcement. There have been several instances of cow-related violence in recent months. The increasing frequency of lynchings led to public outcry and people demanded that the PM address the issue firmly.

Deafening Silence Of Prime Minister On 'Cow Vigilantism' Is Ve…

In a worrying trend, the past few months have witnessed a rise in cow-related violence. Among the victims of these incidents of mob violence are 55-year-olds and a 9-year-old girl. It is time, PM Narendra Modi speak up.

The Logical Indian community thanks the Prime Minister for finally speaking up against cow vigilantism and violence. We hope that the words are turned to action and each of the lynchings are probed and justice is dispensed. Furthermore, it is imperative that no more lynchings take place. For this, the government needs to take a multi-pronged approach, from police reforms and police sensitisation to stricter legislations and ensuring law and order.
