William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon, said, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”  The truth, however, is that the current situation in India is one which is not at all in consonance with the quote. In fact, it would be relatable instead, if we talked of the recent protest intended to target atrocious Mob violence- ‘Not In My Name’.

A citizens’ protest named ‘Not In My Name’ is planned to be held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 28 from 6 pm to 8 pm against the “targeted lynching” and assaults. The organisers are hopeful that similar protests would be held all across the country for a burning issue like this.

When did it all start?

The genesis of this protest started in the mind of Saba Dewan, a Delhi-based documentary filmmaker. Initially, it was merely a Facebook event that Saba had begun, least realising that it would garner so much support from her fellow countrymen. Many like-minded people have come forward to make this event a success.

Saba, in her Facebook post, says that the result of such a protest is the present outcome where thousands have come together for the cause. “This in the present moment is the outcome – When strangers turn fellow travellers by claiming ownership of the campaign as citizens of India and organize protests across the country – at last count – Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Allahabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Trivandrum and beyond the boundaries in London, Toronto, Boston; when I get WhatsApp messages requesting me to attend the Not in My Name protest tomorrow in Delhi,” she writes.

Mob violence in India has been on the rise for some time now. However, this particular protest has been spurred by the recent stabbing of a 15-year-old boy, Junaid, on Friday who was aboard a Delhi-Mathura train. Junaid and his three brothers were slashed with knives on 22 June because they were suspected to be carrying beef in their bags; later the teen was thrown off the train at a station at Asauti, just 30 kms from Delhi.

Dewan is appalled by the atrocities that have been meted out to the Muslims and Dalits in this country for over a period. Through the silence around these ‘targeted lynchings’ the notion of Not In My Name was born.

Gathering nation-wide support

People across the country have supported the cause and rightfully so. At times when lives of innocents are at stake solely based on their identity, it is vital that responsible citizens raise their voices and march in solidarity for a better India.
